Thomas Tuchel, manager of the England national football team, has ignited a firestorm of criticism following his announcement of the 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup finals. While England enters the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico as one of the favourites, Tuchel’s selections have been met with outrage, particularly from the German press, who have labelled his choices “madness.”
High-profile omissions spark outrage
The most significant talking points revolve around several high-profile players who failed to make the cut. Notable omissions include:
- Cole Palmer (Chelsea)
- Phil Foden (Manchester City)
- Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid)
- Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
- Harry Maguire (Manchester United)
- Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest)
- Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)
The decision to leave out established stars and emerging talents has sent shockwaves through the football world. Harry Maguire, a veteran defender, admitted he was “shocked” and “gutted” by his exclusion.
Tuchel, however, defended his selections, emphasizing a focus on team cohesion over individual brilliance. “I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players,” Tuchel stated after the squad announcement. “Teams win championships, it is as simple as that. What we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team. With that in mind, we chose a very balanced squad. I can assure every fan in the country that we have 26, 100% committed players in camp with us who know their role, who are ready to buy into their role on and off the pitch and are ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish.”

A high-stakes gamble for England
Despite Tuchel’s rationale, the German media has been unequivocal in its condemnation of his choices. According to the Daily Mail, the German press “clearly disagree” with the England manager’s approach. Henning Feindt, sports editor of German newspaper BILD, delivered a scathing assessment, highlighting the perceived absurdity of the exclusions.
“Tuchel has opted to leave out exceptional players like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Three of the ten most valuable players – CUT OUT. That would be like (Germany manager Julian) Nagelsmann dropping (Florian) Wirtz and (Joshua) Kimmich from the team in addition to the out-of-form (Jamal) Musiala. In short: madness – but also incredibly exciting,” Feindt commented. He further suggested that Tuchel’s job would be on the line if England fails to lift the trophy, a feat the nation has not achieved since 1966.
England’s World Cup campaign is set to begin on June 17 against Croatia, followed by group stage matches against Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27. The tournament culminates with the final scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey. With such high expectations and a history-making opportunity on the horizon, Tuchel’s controversial squad selection has undoubtedly placed an immense spotlight on his leadership and England’s prospects.
