The question of whether Rayan Cherki stays at Manchester City this season is no longer only in his own hands. It sits with a Premier League commission that has already found the club guilty, and is now deciding how heavy the punishment will be.

In Paris, that calculation is being watched closely. According to TeamTalk reporting carried on Yahoo Sports, Paris Saint-Germain are ahead of Liverpool in the race for the 23-year-old France international, and “would not hesitate” if City are forced to put him on the market at a price the French champions consider workable.

Cherki’s form has pushed him into that conversation. He has produced six goal contributions in eight appearances across competitions this season, following 25 in his first campaign in the Premier League. His current contract at the Etihad runs until 2030.

€42.5m fee, a far higher asking price

Manchester City paid €42.5m to Lyon for Cherki. Any forced departure now would command significantly more, and the ceiling will be set by whichever club City are negotiating against rather than by the player’s own demands.

The sanction that would unlock the market

City were found guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules on 30 September 2026, over the period from 2009/10 to 2017/18, and lodged a comprehensive appeal the following day. The club continues to deny wrongdoing. Possible punishments listed by the Premier League include fines, points deductions, a transfer ban and expulsion.

Until the sanction is handed down, City are not actively looking to sell. TeamTalk describes Cherki’s name as “hugely popular within the PSG boardroom”, and his profile fits a club that leans towards French talent with resale and commercial value.

CaughtOffside’s write-up places Chelsea and Real Madrid alongside Liverpool and PSG in the group monitoring the situation. Bayern Munich have been ruled out as serious contenders.

A separate hearing to decide the punishment is still to be scheduled, with the Premier League stating it intends to conclude the process as quickly as possible.
