Man United links to Ruben Neves quietly unravel behind the scenes

Reports tying Ruben Neves to Old Trafford have circulated in recent weeks, yet the reality appears far less advanced than some speculation has implied.

Early rumours without real traction

Talk of Manchester United exploring a move for Al Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves surfaced as the club continues to assess midfield options for the second half of the season. The Portugal international has been mentioned as a possible experienced addition amid broader discussions around squad balance.

However, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano, those links should not be mistaken for an active transfer pursuit. Romano has indicated that United have not progressed beyond informal conversations and have made no attempt to open negotiations.

While contact was established with Neves’ representatives, there has been no direct engagement with Al Hilal and no talks with the player regarding a potential move.

Romano plays down January expectations

Addressing the speculation on his YouTube channel, Romano offered a clear explanation of where matters stand. According to Romano, there has been no movement in terms of bids, negotiations, or structured talks involving Neves.

He explained that Manchester United’s contact with the agent was part of wider routine discussions that covered several players and potential market opportunities, rather than a focused attempt to secure Neves specifically.

Romano also noted that such conversations are common given the influence of Neves’ representative, stressing that they should not be interpreted as a signal of imminent transfer activity.

Revisiting Neves’ profile and recent career

Neves has been playing in Saudi Arabia since leaving Wolves in 2023, bringing an end to a six year spell at Molineux. During his time in England, he established himself as a consistent Premier League midfielder, making 253 appearances across all competitions.

That run included 177 league matches, during which he scored 30 goals and recorded 13 assists. His experience in English football continues to make him a familiar name whenever midfield vacancies are discussed.

Why the move clashes with United’s direction

Despite Neves’ experience, his profile does not appear to align with Manchester United’s current recruitment priorities. Under the INEOS structure, the club has increasingly focused on younger players with development potential and long term value.

Neves turns 29 in January and is among the highest earners in his position, reportedly receiving around £340,000 per week at Al Hilal. By comparison, United currently have only two players above the £300,000 per week mark, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, with Casemiro’s contract due to expire at the end of the season.

From a financial and strategic perspective, committing significant wages to a player approaching his thirties would represent a departure from the model United are trying to establish.

A story that fades rather than accelerates

With no negotiations underway and little indication of internal momentum, the links between Manchester United and Ruben Neves appear to be cooling rather than developing. As January approaches, United’s attention looks more likely to remain on younger and more sustainable options rather than a high profile short term solution.
