An unnamed Manchester United player has given BBC Sport the first on-the-record read on the dressing room’s mood during a week of speculation over Michael Carrick’s future.
“The feeling is that we all want to put it right. Players, staff, everyone.”
The player spoke to BBC Sport the morning after director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada decided to retain Carrick for the Chelsea match, as Sky Sports reported. United sit 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone, on an eight-match winless run across all competitions.
The question BBC Sport left open
BBC Sport attached a caveat to the quote: the broadcaster said it did not know whether the “we” in the player’s words included captain Bruno Fernandes, and no conversation between captain and manager had been described to it.

Fernandes publicly questioned the coaching staff’s approach after United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como on 21 October, and Carrick dropped him from the starting XI for Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. That selection, more than any single result, pushed Carrick’s future to the top of the news agenda.
Wilcox and Berrada bought him time
Monday’s decision was that the sack could wait. Carrick himself kept the public line flat, telling a pre-Chelsea press conference carried by Sky Sports that he was treating the week as any other.
“I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal, and I love this place.”
Carrick was appointed caretaker in January 2026 after Ruben Amorim was sacked, and handed the job permanently on 22 May after winning 12 of his first 17 matches in charge. The record since has collapsed into eight games without a victory, culminating in Sunday’s loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports has described Carrick’s position as a game-by-game fight, with the Chelsea match framed as the first test of whether Monday’s reprieve becomes anything more. Kick-off at Stamford Bridge is on Saturday 31 October.
