Manchester United have completed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for approximately £35 million.

The Belgium captain has signed a contract running until June 2031 and will wear the number 18 shirt at Old Trafford.

The transfer moved quickly after United activated a release clause worth €41 million in Tielemans’ Villa contract. Personal terms were subsequently finalised before the midfielder completed his medical.

According to Manchester United’s official announcement of the transfer, Tielemans joined the club on July 14, becoming the latest addition to Michael Carrick’s rebuilt squad.

Tielemans targets major trophies

Tielemans arrives with more than seven years of Premier League experience following spells with Leicester City and Aston Villa.

“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said, as quoted by Sky Sports in its report on the completed deal.

The 29-year-old said the move represented the result of years of work and stressed that United’s ambition to challenge for the biggest trophies had been made clear during negotiations.

United director of football Jason Wilcox described Tielemans as one of the Premier League’s most consistent midfielders and highlighted the composure, creativity and leadership he is expected to bring to Carrick’s squad.

United move quickly after Ederson deal collapses

Tielemans emerged as a leading target after United decided not to proceed with their proposed move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson.

The Brazilian had been expected to join the club, but the deal collapsed after concerns emerged during the medical process.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano subsequently reported that United had activated Tielemans’ clause and reached a verbal agreement with the player.

“Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, HERE WE GO!” Romano wrote in the update, as reproduced by Utd Report in its article on the agreement.

Romano also confirmed that the Tielemans move followed the collapse of the Éderson deal and United’s completed signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

New midfield takes shape

Tielemans is United’s second major midfield arrival of the summer after Santos completed a move from Chelsea worth an initial £48 million, with a further £2 million potentially due in add-ons.

The two players offer Carrick contrasting qualities.

Santos is expected to provide defensive intensity, ball recovery and security in possession, while Tielemans brings greater experience and creativity from deeper areas.

As analysed by the Premier League’s Alex Keble, Tielemans excels at breaking opposition lines and creating opportunities through progressive passing. He could operate at the base of midfield or in a more advanced role alongside Bruno Fernandes.

His arrival also provides a proven replacement for Casemiro, who has left Old Trafford, while Manuel Ugarte’s injury has further increased the need for midfield reinforcements.

Villa lose influential figure

Tielemans joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from Leicester in 2023 and developed into one of Unai Emery’s most important players.

He made 134 appearances for Villa, scoring ten goals, and helped the club qualify for the Champions League twice.

Tielemans also opened the scoring as Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 in the 2026 Europa League final, adding another major trophy to a career that already included the FA Cup with Leicester.

According to The Guardian’s report on his departure, his exit represents a significant setback for Villa, particularly following the serious injury suffered by fellow Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana during the World Cup.

Tielemans captained Belgium at the tournament and scored twice during their run to the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Spain.

He now returns to England to join a United side preparing for Champions League football and attempting to build on Carrick’s encouraging first months in charge.
