Manchester United confirm full cost of Amorim exit

A clearer picture has now emerged of how expensive the change has been for the Premier League club.

Decision behind the dismissal

Manchester United dismissed Rúben Amorim while he remained under contract until 2027, a move that automatically activated compensation clauses built into his agreement.

According to The Athletic, the decision was taken internally by the club rather than initiated by the coach, meaning United were responsible for covering the full cost of his early departure.

Because Amorim did not resign, the club was required to settle both remaining salary obligations and additional payments linked to his recruitment.

Breakdown of the financial settlement

Reporting by The Athletic details how the costs were distributed following the dismissal.

United are set to pay £9.5 million to Sporting, the Portuguese club Amorim left to take charge at Old Trafford, reflecting terms agreed during his appointment.

Before his exit, Amorim had already earned £7.8 million in wages under his United contract.

The remaining value of his deal, calculated at £10.05 million, must also be paid, covering the period through the original 2027 expiry.

Overall cost to the club

Taken together, the total cost of Amorim’s time at Manchester United since November 2024 stands at approximately £27 million, according to the same report from The Athletic.

The financial figures were shared publicly by football journalist Fabrizio Romano, who referenced The Athletic’s reporting when outlining the scale of the payout.

Financial reality of managerial turnover

The situation highlights the financial exposure clubs face when opting for stability through long term managerial contracts.

While extended deals are designed to provide continuity, they can quickly become costly if results, performance, or strategic direction force a change. For Manchester United, the accounting impact of the decision will linger well beyond Amorim’s departure.
