The Argentine defender has had a full day to soften what he said in Madrid. The clarification he eventually posted did the opposite.

In an Instagram statement released on Wednesday, roughly 24 hours after Manchester United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, Martinez stood by every substantive point of his original interview. He conceded only that he had “spoken out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted”.

“My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours.”

The rest of the post leaned harder into the message that had set Old Trafford alight the night before, with Martinez calling for “the ambition we must all have as part of this club” and saying the squad needs “everything we need to compete at the highest level”.

What Martinez actually said in Madrid

The statement was framed as a clarification, but the substance of Tuesday night’s TV interview at the Metropolitano had not shifted. On the pitch after the final whistle, Martinez had told broadcasters he was done holding back.

“We (the players) take the responsibility but also as a club I expect more, you know. I expect more. I’m not going to close my mouth.”

“We need to talk more about winning the Champions League, to talk about winning the Premier League.”

He also publicly named his target, pointing at the executive floor and specifically at technical director Jason Wilcox, telling reporters he expected “more from our technical director” and more from “the top”.

A tense flight and a split dressing room

The fallout did not wait for the plane to touch down in Manchester. Sky Sports reports that at least one teammate challenged Martinez over the comments as the squad boarded the flight home, while other players questioned exactly who he was accusing of a lack of ambition.

It is not a clean split. Senior figures in the dressing room are said to share Martinez’s concerns about the club’s direction and the summer’s recruitment, even if few are willing to say so on camera. The problem is the venue he chose to say it in: a live pitchside interview on a Champions League night, with the technical director named.

Boardroom still fuming, no decision on a fine

The club hierarchy’s anger has not subsided with the Instagram post. United have yet to decide whether to discipline Martinez internally for breaching protocol by taking squad-investment grievances public, and the clarification is unlikely to make a fine less likely rather than more.

Head coach Michael Carrick, who took over in January, now carries a defender who has publicly questioned his bosses while the team sits on a five-match winless run. The next test is a Premier League trip to Leeds, where Martinez’s availability has not yet been confirmed while the internal review runs.
