Marcelo got Roberto Carlos’ number: “I never called him”

The Brazilian left-back has described how the man he was brought in to succeed at Real Madrid responded with open doors, a direct line and an invitation to spend Christmas…

Marcelo was 18 when Real Madrid signed him from Fluminense in the January 2007 window. The player he was quietly being lined up to replace, Roberto Carlos, had owned the left flank at the Santiago Bernabéu for a decade and was Marcelo’s own idol since boyhood. The two shared a dressing room for only one half of a season before Roberto Carlos moved on to Fenerbahçe that summer.

Marcelo, speaking on Real Madrid TV’s Campo de Estrellas and carried internationally by Yardbarker, has now described a welcome that bore no trace of the awkwardness of the handover.

“You arrive somewhere, your idol welcomes you warmly knowing that you play in the same position, that I was coming to be ‘Roberto Carlos’s successor,’” he said.

The first gesture from the senior man was practical. He handed over his phone number.

“Marcelo, take my number and write it down. Call me if you need anything,” Marcelo recalled Roberto Carlos saying.

That care, Marcelo said, went far beyond the training ground.

“He treated me, my wife, my brother-in-law, my grandfather, as if we were his family. It’s not normal for someone to treat you so well when they’re coming to play for you. In theory, I was coming to take his place, and he helped me a lot.”

The Christmas call

The pattern continued once Roberto Carlos had left Madrid, Marcelo said, and the initiative kept coming from the older man.

“I never called him, but he called me. One Christmas he told me: ‘Look, we don’t have time to go to Brazil for Christmas because it’s only five days, come to my house.’ I know how important Christmas is for families. Being far from Brazil, I needed to have a home and feel like it was my own.”

‘I only wanted to be Marcelo’

The warmth did not make the sporting part painless. In a separate FourFourTwo interview published earlier this year, Marcelo described how the successor label sat on him.

“Arriving at the best club in the world at such a young age was already difficult, but having to play under the pressure of being the new Roberto Carlos, who was also my role model, made it even harder,” he told the magazine.

“I tried to stay calm and made it clear that I wanted to write my own story. I only wanted to be Marcelo, not anyone’s successor.”

16 seasons at the Bernabéu

The teenager signed as a replacement stayed for 16 seasons. He left Real Madrid in 2022 with five Champions League trophies and six La Liga titles on his record, returned to Fluminense for a second spell, and announced his retirement at 36 on 6 February 2025. “My story as a player ends here,” he wrote on social media.

The verdict on his predecessor has not shifted. Marcelo told EFE earlier this year that Roberto Carlos had been like a big brother to him when he first arrived at the club, and called him by some distance the greatest left-back in the history of football.
