Max Verstappen reacts to racer’s death at Nurburgring
A fatal crash at a Nürburgring endurance race cast a shadow over the weekend, prompting tributes from across the motorsport community, including Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen.
The incident occurred during a Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) race, a competition known for its demanding conditions on one of motorsport’s most challenging circuits. According to race organisers, a multi-car collision involving several vehicles forced an immediate suspension of the event.
Verstappen’s appearance overshadowed
Verstappen had entered the race following the cancellation of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, taking advantage of a break in the Formula 1 calendar. His participation had attracted widespread attention, but focus quickly shifted after news of the crash emerged.
Eyewitness describes chain-reaction crash
Early accounts indicate the incident may have been caused by hazardous track conditions. Speaking to Viaplay, driver Misha Cahroudin, who was directly behind the crash, described the moment it unfolded:

“There was a very big crash. Someone left fluid behind, and I think six or seven cars crashed into each other. So there was a huge traffic jam. You approach that stretch at 220 kilometres per hour, and you can't brake.”
Driver Juha Miettinen dies after crash
Emergency services responded within minutes, but 66-year-old Finnish driver Juha Miettinen later died after being transported to a nearby medical centre. Miettinen was an experienced amateur racer and a regular competitor in the Nürburgring 24-hour race.
Race organisers confirmed that six other drivers were assessed following the incident, with no serious injuries reported.

In the aftermath, Verstappen shared a message on Instagram acknowledging the risks associated with the sport:

“Shocked by what happened today. Motorsport is something we all love, but in a time like this, there is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha's family and loved ones.”
The FIA also issued a statement, saying:
“The FIA is sad to learn of the passing of Juha Miettinen following an incident in today's first race of the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and everyone involved in the event.”
Racing paused, then resumes with tribute
Saturday’s racing was cancelled following confirmation of Miettinen’s death. The event resumed on Sunday, with drivers observing a minute’s silence on the starting grid in his memory.
