Messi, Ronaldo and Ferguson all pointed to one stadium for Europe’s best atmosphere

Some of football’s most decorated figures have played in the sport’s grandest arenas. Yet when Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson reflected on the loudest and most intense atmosphere they experienced in Europe, they all highlighted the same place: Celtic Park in Glasgow.

The Scottish stadium known to supporters as “Paradise” has long held a reputation for producing some of the most intimidating Champions League nights in football.

A Reputation Built on European Nights

During the late 2000s and 2010s, Messi and Ronaldo dominated world football, collecting Ballon d’Or awards, breaking scoring records and driving one of the sport’s most famous rivalries. Their performances frequently lit up the UEFA Champions League while playing for Barcelona and Manchester United or Real Madrid.

Despite playing in many of Europe’s most famous venues, both players later spoke about the atmosphere at Celtic Park as one that stood out.

The stadium, which holds nearly 60,000 fans, has often been praised for the volume and passion generated by Celtic supporters on European nights.

Ronaldo’s Visit With Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo experienced that environment during the 2008 Champions League campaign, when Manchester United travelled to Glasgow in the group stage.

The match finished 1–1 in front of a packed crowd at Celtic Park, with Ronaldo providing the assist for Ryan Giggs’ goal.

Reflecting on the experience in past interviews reported by football media, Ronaldo said:

“The Celtic fans are incredible. It is always great to play there.”

That same season, Ronaldo and Manchester United went on to win the Champions League under manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson’s Verdict

Ferguson himself has also spoken about the intensity of the stadium, even though he spent much of his life associated with Celtic’s Glasgow rivals Rangers.

Recalling conversations with his players about difficult European away grounds, the former Manchester United manager once said:

“Parkhead is the best I've experienced. The players were just talking about that the other day Vidic and Ronaldo were saying it's the best atmosphere they had ever played in. Credit to the supporters for that because they don't half raise the roof. It's obvious the Celtic players react to it given the results they've had. You are going to have to run that extra yard or you will soon be found out by them.”

Messi’s Memories of Celtic Park

Lionel Messi also experienced the atmosphere several times while playing for Barcelona.

One of the most famous matches came in November 2012, when Celtic produced a memorable 2–1 victory over the Spanish side in the Champions League group stage. Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt scored for Celtic before Barcelona pulled one back late through Messi.

After facing Celtic on multiple occasions during his Barcelona career, the Argentine star later acknowledged the challenge of playing in Glasgow.

“The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them. Celtic Park is a tough place to go to. It’s never easy to get a result there... It is the best atmosphere in Europe and we all want to experience that again.”

A Stadium Respected Across Europe

Celtic Park has hosted many dramatic European nights over the decades, often becoming one of the loudest stadiums in the competition when the home supporters are in full voice.

For players used to performing on the biggest stages in world football, that energy clearly left a lasting impression.
