Nottingham Forest‘s impressive 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge has been overshadowed by a significant injury concern to key midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, placing his availability for the crucial Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa in serious doubt.
Gibbs-White sustained a deep cut to his forehead, requiring stitches, after coming on as a substitute against Chelsea. The incident occurred just 20 minutes after his introduction, casting a pall over what was otherwise a dominant performance from Forest, which saw Taiwo Awoniyi net two goals.
Pereira hopes for “magic” from medical team
Manager Vitor Pereira expressed his concern for Gibbs-White, who is now a major doubt for Thursday’s semi-final clash where Forest holds a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg. “I’m waiting. Gibbs-White has a deep cut but he is a fighter and has a strong mentality,” Pereira told reporters, as reported by Mark Whiley and Steve Wollaston-DR. “I hope our medical department can do magic to put him in condition (to play against Villa). We will see.”
Pereira also recounted a conversation with the player, noting that despite the injury, Gibbs-White’s cognitive functions were intact. “I said to him: ‘You don’t need to head the ball just to play’. He is speaking normally, he remembers everything. The only thing is the pain – we will see.”

The injury comes at a critical juncture for Nottingham Forest, who are enjoying a remarkable run of form. The win against Chelsea extended their unbeaten streak across all competitions to 10 matches, a period that has also seen them move six points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Squad rotation and other injury concerns
Pereira had made eight alterations to his starting XI for the Chelsea fixture, a clear indication of his focus on managing player fitness ahead of the demanding Europa League schedule. However, Gibbs-White’s injury was not the only concern from the match. Defender Zach Abbott was also withdrawn due to a concussion substitution. Pereira offered a more optimistic update on Abbott, stating, “I spoke with Zach in the dressing room. I think he is OK.”
Despite the challenges, Gibbs-White himself remained positive, posting on Instagram: “Thanks for the messages of support, what a win, well done Taiwo Awoniyi.” His fighting spirit, however, may not be enough to overcome the physical demands of a head injury in time for the pivotal European fixture.
Nottingham Forest will now anxiously await updates on Gibbs-White’s condition as they prepare for a decisive encounter against Aston Villa, with a place in the Europa League final at stake.
