Real Madrid rebuilt their back line the moment Mourinho walked in. Marc Cucurella arrived from Chelsea in June on a deal to 2032 for an initial €55m, and Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries joined him over the summer. Mourinho took charge on 13 July 2026 on a three-year contract. According to TEAMtalk, none of that spree has changed his view of the player he really wants in the role.

Calafiori, 24, is described in the TEAMtalk report as the “outstanding left-back option” in world football in Mourinho’s eyes, and a “dream” signing for Madrid’s recruitment staff. He is rated ahead of Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol, with his ability to play centrally as well as at left-back a key reason. That versatility is the exact profile Mourinho prefers in a defender he can shift around his back four.

A renewal queued for the same summer

Calafiori signed for Arsenal from Bologna in 2024 and is tied to the Emirates until 2029. The club consider him strictly not for sale, TEAMtalk reports, and plan to open fresh contract talks with him in 2027, after extensions for Jurrien Timber, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice are closed.

That is the same window Mourinho has pencilled in. TEAMtalk say Real Madrid have already made enquiries about Calafiori’s situation, and the Spanish side’s interest is not expected to fade before then.

Arteta committed to 2030

Mikel Arteta signed a new Arsenal contract that runs until June 2030 after lifting the 2025-26 Premier League title. Calafiori has been a regular in his defence this season, when fit.

The Italian missed Arsenal’s EFL Cup defeat to Fleetwood with a hip and ribs issue picked up in the 2-0 league win over Everton the previous Saturday, according to Fantasy Football Scout, which flagged “genuine concern” he could also miss the upcoming Liverpool fixture.
