Julian Nagelsmann’s position as head coach of the German national team is reportedly under serious review following the squad’s disappointing early exit from the 2026 World Cup. Despite previous assurances of his job security from sports director Rudi Völler, the German Football Association (DFB) is now said to be considering his dismissal.
Germany’s campaign at VM2026 came to an abrupt end in the 1/16-finals, suffering a surprising defeat at the hands of Paraguay. The unexpected loss has plunged the national team into a period of intense scrutiny, with Nagelsmann bearing the brunt of heavy criticism.
DFB re-evaluating Nagelsmann’s role
According to Sky Sports (Germany), the DFB is actively weighing its options regarding Nagelsmann’s future. This marks a significant shift from earlier statements, where Völler had initially “protected” the coach amidst growing pressure. The association has yet to make a final decision, indicating that a comprehensive evaluation of the entire tournament performance is still underway.
Despite the mounting pressure, Nagelsmann himself has expressed a clear desire to remain at the helm. Speaking after the World Cup exit, he stated:

“I want to continue. I am ready if that is what the association wants. If they don’t want it, they must tell me. I am ready, and I am not running anywhere. There should be no doubt about that.”
Klopp emerges as preferred successor
Should the DFB decide to part ways with Nagelsmann, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is understood to be the preferred candidate to take over the prestigious role. Klopp’s name has long been linked with the national team job, and his availability makes him a prominent figure in any potential succession planning.
For now, the future of the German national team remains in limbo as the DFB conducts its thorough assessment. The outcome of this evaluation will determine whether Nagelsmann continues his tenure or if a new era under a different coach is set to begin.
