Piero Ausilio has told Inter’s board that there are “no conditions to continue” the working relationship, according to reporting from transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio picked up by Napolimagazine. His contract runs until June 2027, and both sides failed to agree on an extension.
The trigger, per Corriere della Sera, was the shape of the offer on the table. Inter tabled a one-year extension to June 2028 with a salary rise from €1.3m to €1.4m plus bonuses. Ausilio described the proposal as “disrespectful” and told the board there was no basis to keep going.
The decision has landed less than four months after Inter completed the domestic double under Cristian Chivu, winning Serie A and the Coppa Italia in 2025/26. Ausilio was also voted Best Sporting Director at the Globe Soccer Awards in 2024, per Yardbarker.
From Moratti’s youth setup to the top job
Ausilio joined Inter under owner Massimo Moratti in the late 1990s and stepped up to sporting director in December 2010.

Working alongside president Beppe Marotta, he brought in Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Marcus Thuram on free or low-cost deals, and identified club captain Lautaro Martínez when the Argentine was still at Racing Club. Those signings underpinned Inter’s most successful spell in more than a decade.
Interest from abroad has been there. Ausilio turned down a substantial offer from Al-Hilal earlier this year, the same Saudi Pro League club that later hired away head coach Simone Inzaghi. Chivu was appointed as Inzaghi’s replacement.
January exit on the table
Ausilio has told the club he will keep working normally until his deal runs down. An earlier exit is possible if both sides want it, and Corriere dello Sport’s Ivan Zazzaroni has floated January as an option under discussion.
No new employer has been named. He has not received a formal offer, and Al-Hilal’s earlier approach did not develop into a move. The next transfer window opens in January, and until Inter and Ausilio agree otherwise, he is the man who will run it.
