A single-season deduction of 40 to 50 points would be unlike anything the Premier League has ever handed down. It is the figure Football Insider now reports as “increasingly likely” if Manchester City’s appeal against their guilty verdict on 114 of 115 financial charges fails.

The same sources point to an extended transfer ban and a substantial fine as part of the same sanctions package. No points have actually been deducted yet.

The scale of what 40 to 50 points means only becomes clear when the number is set against modelling. Opta’s supercomputer, run by The Analyst, finds that a 40-point deduction is the point at which City’s chance of being relegated tips past 50 per cent. At 60 points, the probability climbs close to, but not quite, 100 per cent. By comparison, Everton were initially docked 10 points in 2023-24 (later reduced to six on appeal) and Nottingham Forest four, the largest Premier League sporting deductions to date.

The verdict Masters called systemic

The deduction talk follows a ruling on a scale the English game has not seen. On 29 September 2026, the Premier League confirmed that an independent commission had found City guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them, covering nine seasons from 2009/10 to 2017/18.

The commission’s redacted core decision described “sham” contracts with commercial partners used to inflate reported revenue by more than £900m, as part of what it called a disguised funding scheme designed to circumvent league rules.

Chief executive Richard Masters said the ruling “details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade.”

City maintain their innocence

The club rejects the ruling in full. Manchester City lodged their appeal on 1 October and have accused the commission of fundamental legal and factual errors.

“The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League,” City said in a statement reported by Sky Sports when the appeal was filed, maintaining that the commission’s opinion “contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.”

A separate hearing will set the number

Under Premier League rules, the appeal panel, an independent three-person body, must hear the case within 12 weeks of 1 October, over no more than five consecutive days. The panel then has 30 days to issue its decision, as NBC Sports has set out.

That points to the hearing concluding by late December 2026 and a final appeal ruling early in 2027. Any sanction, including the actual points figure, would be set in a further hearing after that, meaning the deduction itself could land only once the 2026-27 season is well under way.

City are 21 points into that season from their opening eight league games. On current form, a 40 to 50 point deduction applied before the end of the campaign would drop their total below most sides currently in the relegation places.
