Paul Pogba wants Manchester United to keep faith with Michael Carrick. Speaking to Sky Sports at the Singapore Grand Prix, the Frenchman defended his former team-mate against the criticism piling up at Old Trafford.

“He showed last season when he came, everybody said he was the manager that will change everything,” Pogba said.

“Now that the results don’t come they say maybe he’s too young.”

Pogba, 33, played alongside Carrick at United before his former team-mate moved into coaching. He urged patience from the club’s hierarchy.

“It’s just the start of the season, there’s nothing much to say, it’s just the start of the season and the season is very long.”

“One day or the other it can change a lot, they just have to give them time and it will be fine.”

Carrick’s run under pressure

Carrick was confirmed as permanent manager on May 22 after taking over as interim boss in January, following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal. His contract runs to 2028.

The former United midfielder led the club to a third-place Premier League finish last season. The 2026-27 campaign has started very differently. Carrick’s side sits 13th in the table and his team is one more poor result away from a storm of questions over whether he is the right coach, according to Sky Sports. Brighton also knocked United out of the Carabao Cup last month.

A home draw against Tottenham at the weekend did little to settle nerves.

‘Hopefully we can get two titles’

Pogba also touched on the Premier League’s long-running case against Manchester City, suggesting United could benefit retroactively.

“I just hope it’s not going to affect the Premier League and hopefully we can get two titles,” he told Sky Sports.

The reference points to the two seasons Pogba finished runner-up to City with United.

Pogba, a free agent at 33

Pogba himself has not played competitively for months. He became a free agent in August when AS Monaco cut short his two-year deal after an injury-hit 2025-26 that produced just six Ligue 1 appearances.

The next test for Carrick arrives on Tuesday evening at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, where United face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League league phase after opening their European campaign with a 4-0 home win.
