A pilot delivered a brutal World Cup prank to a cabin full of Argentina supporters who had been unable to follow the final while in the air.
Footage circulating on social media shows passengers wearing Argentina’s blue and white shirts waiting for confirmation of the result against Spain.
The captain began by describing a closely fought final that had required extra time. He then said the crew wanted to congratulate their Argentine passengers, prompting an immediate eruption of cheers inside the cabin.
Supporters rose from their seats, embraced and celebrated what they believed was Argentina’s second successive World Cup triumph.

Seconds later, the pilot delivered the real result: “Spain has won.”
The celebrations stopped almost immediately.
Cheers turn to silence
The contrast was stark. A cabin filled with chanting and applause fell quiet as the passengers realised they had been misled.
The footage was shared by The Mirror in its report on the incident, which described the captain as Spanish.

However, the available video does not identify the pilot, airline or route. Those details have not been independently confirmed, and only part of the announcement is shown in the widely shared clips.
No disturbance is visible after the result is revealed. Reports have also not identified any disorder on board, despite criticism of the pilot for provoking such an emotional reaction among passengers during a flight.
Argentine newspaper La Voz del Interior described the announcement as a joke in poor taste, while another report warned that deliberately misleading a cabin of emotionally invested supporters could have created an unnecessary safety problem. The airline and destination remained unknown when The Sun reported on the video.
Spain dominated the real final
The match itself was not an evenly balanced contest, despite remaining goalless for 105 minutes.

Spain controlled 65 per cent of possession and registered 20 attempts, including 12 on target. Argentina managed only two shots and failed to test goalkeeper Unai Simón.
Argentina’s task became even harder when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. The Chelsea midfielder had been booked for dissent before making a late and reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsí.
Ferran Torres finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, scoring from Nico Williams’ pass to give Spain a 1-0 victory and their second men’s World Cup title.
The goal was therefore not a last-minute winner, as initially claimed. It arrived at the beginning of the second period of extra time, with Argentina given almost 15 minutes to respond.
