Porto gamble on experience with Thiago Silva return
Porto have turned to experience as they look to protect their lead at the top of the Primeira Liga, confirming the signing of veteran defender Thiago Silva on a contract through the end of the 2025–26 season.
The 41-year-old Brazilian joins from Fluminense and arrives with a brief to stabilise a squad entering a demanding stretch of domestic and European fixtures. The club confirmed the deal on Sunday via its official channels.
Silva’s return to European football is unusual at this stage of a career, but Porto believe his decision-making and organisational ability can still influence matches at the highest level.
Arrival and first words
Silva landed at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport on Sunday afternoon, greeted by club officials and a heavy media presence. Shortly after, Porto released a short video of the defender holding a club scarf and addressing supporters.

“Hello Portistas, I am in Porto after almost 22 years,” Silva said. “I am very happy and hope to see you soon.”
The club also presented personalised shirts for Silva’s wife, Belle, and his sons Iago and Isago. Both children are currently enrolled in Chelsea’s academy, a factor understood to have weighed into the family’s decision to relocate back to Europe.
Why Farioli wanted him
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, head coach Francesco Farioli personally pushed for the signing following a serious injury to centre-back Nehuén Pérez.
Porto boast the league’s strongest defensive record, but Farioli was keen to add a senior organiser capable of managing a high line and building play from the back. While younger defenders such as Jakub Kiwior and Jan Bednarek remain key options, Silva is expected to play a leadership role, particularly in Europa League knockout matches.

Despite his age, Silva featured 46 times for Fluminense in 2025. Portuguese media reported that Porto’s medical staff were encouraged by fitness data that placed him close to players a decade younger.
A past left unfinished
Silva first arrived in Porto in 2004 from Juventude, but his initial spell in Europe never progressed as planned. After being moved to the club’s B team, he contracted tuberculosis and spent six months hospitalised in Moscow.
Doctors warned he could lose part of his lung and might never return to professional football. He left Portugal without making a senior appearance and rebuilt his career elsewhere, later winning major honours in France and England.
More than two decades on, Silva now widely known as “O Monstro” returns with the chance to finally debut for Porto’s first team.

Eyes still on 2026
According to multiple reports, Silva has not ruled out a return to the Brazil national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Although he last featured internationally in 2022, those close to the player believe regular football in Europe offers a clearer route back into contention than remaining in Brazil.
For Porto, the signing carries risk. For Silva, it offers something rarer: a chance to finish a story that once looked as if it would never properly begin.
