The countdown to the 2026/27 Premier League season has officially reached its final month.

English football’s top flight will return on Friday, August 21, exactly one month after the league marked the occasion on its official social media channels.

The new campaign begins at the Emirates Stadium, where defending champions Arsenal host newly promoted Coventry City. The match is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 BST.

Champions launch title defence

According to the official fixture schedule published by the Premier League, Arsenal’s meeting with Coventry will be the first of 380 matches during the new campaign.

Coventry face a daunting return to the Premier League, having been handed an immediate trip to the reigning champions.

Saturday’s programme begins with Hull City hosting Manchester United. Everton face Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town meet Sunderland and Nottingham Forest take on Leeds United before Brentford welcome Tottenham in the late match.

Newcastle and Liverpool headline Sunday

The opening weekend then delivers one of its biggest fixtures on Sunday afternoon when Newcastle United host Liverpool at St James’ Park.

Manchester City begin their campaign at home against Bournemouth, while Aston Villa travel to Brighton.

The first round concludes on Monday evening with a west London meeting between Fulham and Chelsea at Craven Cottage.

World Cup forces delayed start

The Premier League will begin a week later than usual following the expanded 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

There are just 33 days between the World Cup final on July 19 and Arsenal’s opening match against Coventry. The delayed start gives clubs additional time to rest players who were involved deep into the tournament.

Pre-season preparations are already under way, with the league providing an updated overview of every club’s summer schedule.

Managers now have only a few weeks to integrate new signings, settle tactical plans and bring returning internationals back up to speed.

The season will be played across 33 weekends and five midweek rounds before concluding on Sunday, May 30, 2027. After a summer dominated by the World Cup and transfer speculation, the Premier League is finally moving back into view.
