João Cancelo swung the roof off the Camp Nou in the eighth minute with a powerful strike from distance, and by the interval Hansi Flick’s side led 4-1. Raphinha converted from the spot on 25 minutes, and after Maguette Gueye had briefly pulled one back for the visitors, a second Cancelo shot deflected off Asier Villalibre on 36. Raphinha added his second in first-half stoppage time, moments after Yamal had watched a penalty of his own saved by Julen Agirrezabala.

Yassir Zabiri narrowed the score to 4-2 just past the hour, but Raphinha completed his treble from another penalty on 67, Gabriel Jesus made it six, and Yamal finally got the goal his afternoon deserved on 89.

The scoring rate keeps climbing

The result took Barcelona to 18 points from six La Liga games and lifted their league tally to 28 goals. Even before Wednesday’s rout, the club’s opening five matches had produced 21 goals, the most prolific start to a La Liga season the club has managed since 2011-12.

Raphinha went into the game leading the scoring charts with six goals; three more take him to nine La Liga goals for the season. Fermín López has chipped in with four goals and two assists, and Yamal had created 13 chances and put 11 shots on target across the first five rounds.

Madrid keep the pressure on

Wednesday’s win came a day after Real Madrid dragged themselves through a scare of their own at Elche. José Mourinho’s side led 2-0 through a Matías Dituro own goal and Kylian Mbappé’s seventh league goal of the season, only for Abiel Osorio and Fer Niño to level things at 2-2. Carlos Espí stabbed in a stoppage-time winner from a Mbappé assist to lift Madrid onto 15 points.

Mourinho was blunt about the panic that came with the surrendered lead.

“We went from having it easy to losing control. The team reacted and won the match, which in the end is the most important thing,” he said.

Racing return to Cantabria with heavy defeat

Barcelona’s cushion at the top is back to three points. Racing Santander, playing their first La Liga season since promotion, head home from the Spotify Camp Nou on the wrong end of a seven-goal thrashing.
