A January move for JJ Gabriel is no longer a theory. “A free transfer in January is planned and therefore possible,” Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reported, setting a concrete timeline on a transfer saga that has rumbled through the Manchester United academy all autumn.
The paperwork is what makes that timing work. Gabriel already holds an Irish passport, and he is now expected to receive a Cypriot one in the coming weeks, opening the EU route needed for a minor to move between clubs in different associations under FIFA’s Article 19 exemption for players with EU nationality.
Real Madrid and Barcelona ready an ‘XXL’ offer
The chase has narrowed to two Spanish giants. “Real Madrid and Barcelona are currently very concrete, both ready to offer the XXL package of salary, bonuses and signing-on fee,” Plettenberg said of the proposed deal, which combines wages, bonuses and a signing-on fee for the teenager.
Gabriel is reported to prefer a move to Real Madrid, with the club increasingly confident of landing him. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the situation, though the serious money is sitting in Spain.

The sum United will collect from any of this is extraordinarily small by the standards of elite European football. The training compensation owed is just £350,000, the figure a Spanish buyer would need to pay the club that developed him.
The three bench appearances Carrick refused
The bitter twist for United is how close they came to holding on. Three places on the senior bench this season, against Sabah in the Champions League, Brighton in the League Cup and Bournemouth in the Premier League, would have been enough to keep the teenager at Old Trafford, according to Plettenberg’s reporting. Manager Michael Carrick, who remains in the job despite a difficult start to the season, refused each request.
Gabriel had already asked United to cancel his registration in September so he could leave immediately. The club refused and offered him a scholarship contract instead.
The next window to formalise the switch opens in January 2027.
