Real Madrid dominates Athletic, yet dressing-room split deepens around Xabi Alonso

Reports in Spain suggest that not all players are aligned with Alonso’s methods. El Partidazo de COPE reported that several senior figures have grown frustrated with their roles or playing time since the managerial change.

According to the programme, Fede Valverde, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Brahim Díaz, Endrick and Ferland Mendy are among those expressing dissatisfaction.

COPE also noted uncertainty around Eduardo Camavinga, who reportedly feels unclear about how he fits into the current structure. These concerns emerged before the trip to Bilbao, adding weight to what became a highly scrutinised fixture for the club.

Spotlight shifts to the attack

Among the reported critics, Vinicius Jr stands out as the biggest name. COPE’s reporting suggests the Brazilian has struggled to adjust to an attack now centred around Mbappé, whose explosive start to the season has made him Madrid’s focal point.

With 25 goals in 20 matches, Mbappé’s influence has been unmistakable. Vinicius, meanwhile, has had a slower start, tallying five goals in the same period.

Despite this dip, Vinicius remains one of Madrid’s most valuable players and is under contract until 2027.

Contract negotiations add another layer

The Athletic has reported that Madrid recently offered Vinicius a deal worth around £17.5 million per year, while his camp is seeking closer to £26 million. According to the outlet, he is unlikely to agree to an extension until his relationship with Alonso improves.

Not all players are dissatisfied

COPE indicated that several squad members remain firmly behind the manager, including summer arrivals Dean Huijsen and Álvaro Carreras, as well as Thibaut Courtois, Arda Güler and Mbappé. All have settled well into Alonso’s early plans, with Mbappé’s performance in the 3–0 win reinforcing his importance.

Questions around other stars

Speculation has also touched Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold amid rumours of friction involving Bellingham. Alonso has rejected those claims, stressing the need to help the midfielder rediscover rhythm as Madrid look to build on the victory in Bilbao.
