Former Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has publicly voiced his opposition to the potential return of José Mourinho as head coach, a move widely reported to be nearing completion despite Mourinho’s current contract with Benfica until 2027, as reported by SportBible.

Casillas, a legendary figure who made 725 appearances for Real Madrid between 1999 and 2015, including three Champions League triumphs, took to social media on Tuesday to express his strong reservations about the Portuguese manager’s re-appointment. His comments come as Real Madrid navigates a challenging period, having gone two seasons without securing a major title.

“When @realmadrid goes two seasons without winning a title, it’s time to worry,” Casillas wrote, reflecting on the club’s current form. “The ‘Clásico’ was already tough before it even started being played. Let’s look ahead to next season and forget about the current one.”

Casillas’s personal stance on Mourinho

The former goalkeeper, whose relationship with Mourinho was reportedly strained during their previous time together at the Santiago Bernabéu, made it clear that his objection was not personal but professional. “I have no problem with Mourinho,” Casillas stated. “He seems like a great professional to me. I don’t want him at Real Madrid. I think other coaches would be better equipped to coach at the club of my life. Personal opinion. Nothing more.”

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, guiding the club to a La Liga title and the Copa del Rey. However, his trophy haul has significantly dwindled since leaving Manchester United in 2018, where he won the League Cup and Europa League in 2017. His only major honour since then is the Conference League triumph with Roma in 2022.

Real Madrid’s search for stability

The public debate over Mourinho’s potential return highlights the growing pressure on Real Madrid to reclaim its dominant position. The two-season title drought has fueled concerns, with recent reports even suggesting internal friction, including alleged fighting between Aurélien Tchouaméni and Fede Valverde. The club will return to La Liga action against Real Oviedo on May 14, with the coaching situation likely to remain a significant talking point.
