Real Madrid’s lead narrows as Barcelona dominate Celta Vigo

Barcelona’s trip to Balaídos turned into a statement of intent, as Hansi Flick’s men overpowered Celta Vigo 4–2 to close the gap on Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

But the coach’s satisfaction was tempered by frustration over Frenkie de Jong’s red card, which he described as “incredible.”

Celebrating his 50th league game in charge, Flick’s team dominated the match with fluid attacking play and near-total control of possession.

Robert Lewandowski delivered a vintage hat-trick, while Pedri added another goal to seal a convincing win that narrowed Madrid’s lead to three points.

Celta briefly threatened through Iago Aspas and Jorgen Strand Larsen, but Barcelona’s control in the second half was decisive.

The Catalans recorded 20 shots, eight on target, and maintained 63% possession, a reflection of their growing confidence.

Confidence Before the Break

After the match, Flick emphasized that earning three points before the international break was vital to keeping momentum in the title race.

He noted that his side’s response after halftime showed maturity and discipline, and that maintaining pressure on Madrid gives the squad extra motivation heading into the next round.

The victory leaves Barcelona on 28 points, just behind Real Madrid’s 31 after 12 matches, a reminder that the defending champions are still within reach.

Lewandowski’s Timeless Touch

The spotlight fell on Lewandowski, whose sharp finishing evoked memories of his prime years. The 37-year-old striker, back from injury, looked rejuvenated and confident, taking his league tally to seven goals.

Flick later highlighted how the Polish veteran’s renewed self-belief had transformed the team’s attacking edge.

His performance offered the cutting edge Barcelona have often lacked this season and reaffirmed his status as Flick’s most reliable finisher.

De Jong’s Suspension a Blow

The only setback came in stoppage time when Frenkie de Jong was dismissed for a second yellow card, ruling him out of the next fixture against Athletic Club.

Flick said the midfielder’s absence will be difficult to manage given his influence in controlling rhythm and tempo. He also expressed hope that Pedri and Raphinha would return from injury after the break.

De Jong’s suspension will test Barcelona’s depth in midfield, particularly against an Athletic side currently pushing for European qualification.

Inside the dressing room, morale remains high. Flick praised his players’ collective spirit and noted that the squad is “on the right track” both in La Liga and the Champions League.
