Speculation is mounting around Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull Racing, with reports suggesting the team is already eyeing potential long-term replacements, notably Oliver Bearman. The reigning champion’s contract includes an active exit clause, a detail that could trigger significant movement in the Formula 1 driver market.

Verstappen, despite being contracted to Red Bull until 2028, has a specific provision in his deal allowing him to depart if he falls outside the top two in the Drivers’ Championship by the summer break. This period for the exit clause is now active, and Verstappen is currently placed sixth in the standings, having finished runner-up at the Hungarian Grand Prix last month. Red Bull is reportedly eager to offer the Dutch driver an improved contract that would waive this crucial exit clause.

Oliver Bearman emerges as a key target

Amidst this uncertainty, 21-year-old Oliver Bearman has emerged as a driver of significant interest for Red Bull. Sky Sports F1 reports that Bearman is viewed as a long-term option should Verstappen ultimately decide to leave. Bearman’s burgeoning career has already seen him make a notable impact in Formula 1:

• He became a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2022.

• Bearman was the youngest-ever driver to compete for Ferrari.

He joined Haas as a full-time driver last year and is contracted with the team until at least the end of the current season.

Red Bull’s feeder team, Racing Bulls, has historically served as a proving ground for young talent hoping to ascend to the main Red Bull roster, a tradition spanning twenty years. However, Racing Bulls chief Alan Permane distanced his team from the direct decision-making process regarding Verstappen’s potential successor.

“For my team, nothing changes, because Max doesn’t drive for us,” Permane told Formule1.nl. “If you want to know what happens at Red Bull, you need to ask Laurent Mekies that question. It’s up to Laurent to decide who drives for Red Bull next season. That’s not my call.”

Wider driver market implications

Beyond Bearman, the potential departure of Verstappen could open the door for other experienced drivers. Carlos Sainz is also considered a leading candidate to replace Verstappen, according to Sky Sports F1. While younger talents like Racing Bulls star Arvid Lindblad and F2 driver Nikola Tsolov have been mentioned as options, pairing either with Isack Hadjar is considered an “almighty risk” for Red Bull.

The coming months will be crucial in determining Verstappen’s future and, by extension, could trigger a significant reshuffle across the Formula 1 grid, with Red Bull carefully weighing its options for the long term.
