A tense ending in Dallas
Spain’s narrow World Cup win over Portugal ended with more than just Iberian heartbreak.
In the closing moments of the round-of-16 match in Arlington, Texas, Bernardo Silva had a late chance to force extra time, but headed over the crossbar after six minutes of stoppage time.
According to AP via Houston Chronicle, Rodri then reacted in front of his former Manchester City teammate, clenching his fist after the miss.
Silva, clearly angered by the gesture, got back to his feet and confronted the Spanish midfielder before the situation was defused.

Rodri admits mistake
After the match, Rodri accepted that he had gone too far.
According to The Sun, the Spain midfielder said: “I apologise to Bernardo Silva for celebrating his miss on that last action. It’s my fault.”
He also tried to place the incident in the context of their relationship, rather than a deeper personal conflict.
“I made a mistake,” Rodri said. “I apologised to him immediately. But that’s all, because of the trust we have.”

Former teammates on opposite sides
The flashpoint stood out because of the history between the two players.
Rodri and Bernardo spent years together at Manchester City, forming part of one of the most successful teams of the Pep Guardiola era. They were central figures in the club’s treble-winning side in 2023 and shared the midfield during some of City’s most dominant seasons.
But on this night, club loyalty meant little.
Spain were defending a narrow lead, Portugal were fighting to stay alive, and Silva’s missed header proved to be the final chance of the match.

Spain move on, Portugal go home
Mikel Merino scored the only goal of the game, sending Spain into the quarter-finals and knocking Portugal out of the tournament.
For Bernardo, the miss came at the worst possible moment. For Rodri, the reaction briefly overshadowed another controlled performance in Spain’s midfield.
The apology should prevent the incident from becoming a lasting personal dispute, but it still captured the emotional edge of a knockout match between two rivals.
Even old teammates can lose themselves for a second when a World Cup place is on the line.
