Ronaldinho gets his own Netflix documentary series

Netflix is preparing to release a slate of documentaries centered on Brazilian football in the months leading up to this year’s World Cup.

According to Stewart Clarke of Deadline, the streaming platform has commissioned three productions that together explore iconic players, historic moments and the sport’s deep cultural roots in Brazil.

The projects will roll out throughout the spring and early summer as part of Netflix’s growing investment in sports documentaries.

Ronaldinho takes center stage in new documentary

The first title in the lineup is Ronaldinho: The One and Only, which premieres on April 16.

According to Deadline, the three part documentary focuses on the Brazilian superstar who became globally famous for his creativity, skill and joyful playing style.

Produced by Canal Azul and Trailer Films, the series features previously unseen archival material alongside scenes from Ronaldinho’s present day life.

The documentary traces how a young player from Porto Alegre rose to global stardom and eventually won the Ballon d’Or while playing for FC Barcelona.

Brazil’s 1994 world cup triumph revisited

The second documentary, USA 94: Brazil’s Return to Glory, will debut on May 7.

According to Deadline, the film revisits Brazil’s fourth World Cup title, which the national team secured during the tournament held in the United States in 1994.

Members of the Brazilian squad appear in interviews alongside former opponents. The production also includes behind the scenes footage recorded by the players themselves during the tournament.

The documentary is directed by Luis Ara and produced by Trailer Films.

Amateur tournament in São Paulo highlights football’s grassroots spirit

The third project is The Root of the Game, which premieres on Netflix on June 8.

According to Deadline, the series centers on Super Copa Pioneer, one of the largest and most prestigious amateur tournaments in São Paulo.

The documentary follows players and coaches hoping that football could change their lives, offering rare access behind the scenes of the competition.

The series is produced by Ginga Pictures in partnership with R21 and directed by Alec Cutter.

Netflix expands its focus on brazilian football stories

Netflix has increasingly invested in original productions from Brazil, a country where football remains deeply embedded in national culture and identity.

Elisa Chalfon, Head of Nonfiction at Netflix Brazil, explained why the sport has become a key storytelling focus for the platform.

“This sport creates a unique connection with audiences,” she said. “These are stories born on the streets, in neighborhoods, within families, spanning generations and reinforcing a sense of pride. This is an important pillar for Netflix, and we remain committed to investing in original productions that captivate audiences, both longtime sports fans and those who aren’t yet.”

The documentaries will roll out in the months leading up to the World Cup, a period when global interest in football typically intensifies.
