Ruben Amorim urged to grant Joshua Zirkzee transfer exit

Joshua Zirkzee’s time at Manchester United could be nearing an end.

The Dutch forward, frustrated by his lack of opportunities, has reportedly asked to leave in January, a decision that might ultimately benefit both the player and the club.

According to Manchester Evening News, Zirkzee has not started a single match this season and is seeking regular football ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

United boss Ruben Amorim is now facing growing calls to approve the 24-year-old’s departure.

Rising young talent

United’s reluctance to lose attacking depth in mid-season is understandable. However, the emergence of 17-year-old Chido Obi offers an internal solution that could ease Amorim’s concerns.

Obi, who joined from Arsenal, has impressed for United’s academy and scored this week against Rochdale’s senior side. Promoting him to first-team rotation could give Amorim the backup he needs without blocking the teenager’s development.

Those close to the club believe the youngster’s growing confidence and sharp finishing make him a strong candidate to step up if Zirkzee departs.

System that works

Another factor supporting the move is Amorim’s tactical shift to a strikerless 3-4-3 setup, a formation that’s brought results and reduced reliance on traditional forwards.

In the win over Liverpool, Matheus Cunha led the line supported by Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo, a combination that caused constant problems for Arne Slot’s defence.

Amorim’s structure relies on fluid movement rather than a fixed No.9, making Zirkzee’s role increasingly redundant.

With the current system proving successful, Amorim could allow the Dutchman to leave without major tactical disruption.

Fairness to the player

Zirkzee’s frustrations stem from a difficult year. After a £36.5 million move to Old Trafford, he struggled for form and was widely criticised following a loss to Newcastle over Christmas 2024.

Since then, he has worked hard to rebuild his confidence, but opportunities have remained scarce.

Despite earning a place in the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024, he has not been called up since last November, largely due to limited club minutes.

Approving his transfer would not only acknowledge his professionalism but also give him a chance to revive his international career.

Amorim, known for his pragmatic approach, has previously sanctioned exits when it served both the player’s and club’s interests. Doing the same here could uphold that reputation.
