Salah exit shifts focus to Slot’s past comments at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah’s decision to leave Liverpool has brought renewed focus to comments previously made by head coach Arne Slot, particularly regarding the forward’s resilience and importance to the team. According to Liverpool.com and reporting by Sian Jones, the Egypt international announced his departure in a video posted on social media, signaling the beginning of the end of a defining era at Anfield.

Salah joined Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017 and quickly became one of the club’s most influential figures. According to Liverpool.com, he now ranks third on Liverpool’s all time scoring list, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt, while playing a central role in winning major honors including two Premier League titles and the Champions League. His departure will leave a significant void in both goals and experience within the squad.

Slot praises Salah’s response to adversity

Comments made by Arne Slot after a Champions League match against Galatasaray have taken on added significance following the announcement. According to Liverpool.com, Salah missed a penalty in the first half of that match but responded with a goal and an assist in a 4,0 victory.

“It says a lot about him that after you miss a penalty just before half time as that can sometimes be hard for an individual or for a team,” Slot said, according to Liverpool.com.

He added: “So that tells you a lot about his mental strength but definitely also of the team, because adversity is something we can definitely talk about in this season."

The goal also marked a historic milestone, as Salah became the first African player to reach 50 goals in the Champions League, further underlining his impact at the highest level.

Questions around relationship with Slot

The context of Salah’s exit also includes earlier reports of tension between the player and his manager. According to Liverpool.com, Salah said in a December interview that his relationship with Slot had deteriorated and suggested he was being pushed toward the exit.

The same report noted that Salah was left out of a match against Inter Milan shortly afterward, although he later returned to the team following internal discussions. Slot later downplayed any lasting issues.

“As normal, as it has always been,” Slot said about their relationship, according to Liverpool.com.

He added: “I'm happy to have him back because, as I said, this season I've only had two wingers who would tell me that's their favourite position… and that's Mo and Cody Gakpo.”

Salah’s influence on Liverpool’s attack

Slot also highlighted Salah’s importance to Liverpool’s attacking output, particularly during periods when he was unavailable. According to Liverpool.com, the team created chances but struggled with finishing in his absence.

“To have Mo back is, of course, helpful because in his absence we've created a lot of chances and not always converted them,” he said.

He added: “So it's nice to have him back.”

These comments reinforce how central Salah has been to Liverpool’s attacking structure, not only as a goal scorer but as a consistent performer capable of changing games.

Liverpool prepares for life after Salah

Salah’s confirmed departure now raises broader questions about how Liverpool will adapt without one of its most productive players. According to Liverpool.com, his statistical output and tactical importance are unmatched within the current squad, making any replacement a complex challenge.

Rather than a straightforward transfer solution, Liverpool may need to rethink its attacking approach or redistribute responsibilities across multiple players. Either way, the club appears to be entering a transitional phase as it prepares for a future without one of the defining figures of its modern success.
