‘Deeply Offensive’ – De Zerbi criticised by Spurs fans over Greenwood comments
Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur was meant to signal a reset during a turbulent season but the reaction from supporters has quickly complicated that narrative.
The 46-year-old Italian has signed a five-year deal to take charge of a side currently battling near the bottom of the Premier League table after difficult spells under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor. While his track record at Brighton and Marseille suggests he can improve performances, attention has rapidly shifted to controversy off the pitch.
Concerns over past comments
Criticism has centered on De Zerbi’s previous remarks about Mason Greenwood, whom he coached at Marseille. The Tottenham Supporters’ Trust said those comments risk alienating sections of the fanbase at a critical moment.
In a statement, the group described his remarks as

"unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters,"
adding that they could leave “victims of male violence alarmed.”
The Trust warned that the issue could undermine unity as the club attempts to rally support in its fight for survival, urging clarity from Tottenham over how the situation is being addressed.
Background to the issue
Greenwood left Manchester United after he was charged in 2022 with offences including attempted rape and assault; the case was later dropped. He subsequently moved to France, where De Zerbi publicly praised both his ability and, more controversially, his character.

Speaking before Greenwood’s arrival, De Zerbi said, according to The Standard, that he viewed the forward as a “world-class player,” while making clear he did not involve himself in players’ private lives.
He later defended Greenwood more personally, saying:
"He’s a good guy… He has found the right environment for him."
Those remarks have resurfaced following De Zerbi’s appointment, prompting renewed scrutiny.

A delicate start
Tottenham’s decision to appoint De Zerbi comes at a pivotal stage of the season, with results on the pitch now intertwined with questions about leadership and values off it.
For a club trying to stabilize both its performances and its relationship with supporters, the early response suggests De Zerbi’s tenure will begin under pressure on multiple fronts not just in the league table, but in rebuilding trust as well.
