Shock exit: Flamengo fire Filipe Luís after trophy-packed 18-month reign

According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Flamengo have parted ways with head coach Filipe Luís despite a highly successful period that brought a series of major trophies to the Rio De Janeiro club.

Sudden dismissal after historic run

Filipe Luís, a former Brazil international and long-time Flamengo player, took charge of the club less than 18 months ago and quickly guided the team through one of the most successful stretches in its recent history.

During his tenure, Flamengo captured the Copa Libertadores and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, while also lifting the Supercopa Do Brasil and the Copa Do Brasil.

The club also secured additional honors including the Campeonato Carioca, the Challenger Cup and the Derby Of The Americas, adding further silverware during a short but productive managerial spell.

According to Onefootballs instagram, the decision to dismiss the 39-year-old coach came despite the team maintaining strong results across domestic and international competitions.

Victory before the decision

The timing of the move has surprised many supporters.

Just one day before the announcement, Flamengo recorded an emphatic 8–0 victory to reach the final of the Campeonato Carioca. The dominant performance appeared to underline the team’s momentum and strong form under Filipe Luís.

That result made the club’s decision even more unexpected for fans and observers, given the recent run of success and the number of trophies collected during his tenure.

Why Flamengo made the call

According to Xinhua, Filipe Luís said he leaves Flamengo “with my head held high and with a clear conscience” after being dismissed as head coach on Tuesday. The former Brazil international shared a message on Instagram thanking the club’s board, players and supporters following his departure.

“I leave at peace, with my head held high and with a clear conscience,” Filipe Luís wrote. “I thank the board for giving me the opportunity to experience such a successful cycle and I will always be grateful for the trust I was given to build such a remarkable journey.”

During his 17 months in charge, the 40-year-old guided Flamengo to 63 wins, 21 draws and 16 defeats while securing multiple trophies, including the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian league title.

Despite that success, Brazilian media reported that pressure had grown after a difficult start to the 2026 season. Flamengo lost the Supercopa Do Brasil 2,0 to Corinthians and were defeated in both legs of the Recopa Sudamericana by Lanús. The club also sits 11th in the 20 team Campeonato Brasileiro Série A standings with four points from its opening three matches.

In a statement released after Flamengo reached the Campeonato Carioca final with an 8,0 win over Madureira, the club thanked the former defender for his time in charge.

“Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luís for everything he has achieved and shared during his time with the club,” the statement read. “The club wishes him success and good luck in his future professional endeavors.”

Local media have since reported that Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim is among the leading candidates to replace him.
