Simone Biles shrugs off the NFL WAG label

The 11-time Olympic medalist told Us Weekly the label does not bother her, and she will not be following Indianapolis Colts safety Jonathan Owens to away games this season.

Simone Biles has heard the WAG line often enough since marrying an NFL player. Her verdict is short.

“It doesn’t matter when somebody’s like, ‘Oh, Simone’s one of the WAGs.’ Don’t care,” she told Us Weekly in an interview published on September 30 while promoting the Arcutis Biotherapeutics “Skin to Believe In” campaign.

The resume behind the shrug is the point. Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history, with 41 combined World Championship and Olympic medals, including 11 at the Olympics across Rio, Tokyo and Paris.

“I know I’ve done great things on an Olympic level and for the mental health community, foster [care] community, all of this stuff,” she said. “To me, it doesn’t seem derogatory because I know exactly who I am.”

She was blunter still a line later.

“I don’t care what you call me. I’ve done what I’ve done.”

The marriage, the move, the new team

Biles has been married to Jonathan Owens since 2023. The safety is on his fourth NFL team: he spent 2019 to 2022 with the Houston Texans, 2023 with the Green Bay Packers and 2024 to 2025 with the Chicago Bears before the Indianapolis Colts signed him as an unrestricted free agent on March 17.

Every move has meant another stadium for Biles to show up at, and another round of commentary about what a woman with her trophy cabinet is doing holding up a #38 jersey on a Sunday.

Why she is staying home this fall

Last season she went to every one of Owens’ games with the Bears. That is the part she is adjusting.

“Last year was the first year I went to every single game,” Biles told Us Weekly. “That was really hard.”

So this fall she is picking her spots. Home games in Indianapolis stay in the diary; the road weekends do not. The decision, she said, is about protecting her own work, not about any cooling on football Sundays.

The WAG framing itself is not new to Biles’ marriage. Owens previously drew backlash for calling himself “the catch” of their relationship, a line Biles later waved off in her own words. The current version of the conversation lands the same way, only shorter.
