Sir Alex Ferguson set for new Sky Sports documentary exploring life beyond Manchester United

The broadcaster published the short promo on its website, branded “coming soon to Sky Sports,” without naming a release date, a running time or confirming the lineup of contributors. The timing is no accident. Ferguson was appointed Manchester United manager on 6 November 1986, and the anniversary has dominated the club’s week.

The chosen title points to the angle Sky is pursuing. Rather than another trophy-by-trophy recap of a 26-year reign that ended in 2013, “More than a Manager” signals a portrait of the person behind the silverware, the dressing-room authority and the public caricature of the hairdryer and the chewing gum.

A career measured in decades

Ferguson’s numbers at Manchester United are the frame every documentary has to work inside. Over 26 years he collected 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League crowns, before stepping down in 2013. His first match in the dugout, a 2-0 loss away at Oxford United, gave no hint of what followed.

What a Sky production can add, four decades on, is distance. The contemporaries who played under him, the rivals who tried to outmanoeuvre him and the executives who signed his players are now free to speak with less to protect.

United mark the anniversary

Manchester United published a tribute video on MUTV titled “Icons salute Sir Alex,” featuring figures from across his era.

Current head coach Michael Carrick, who played under Ferguson, used the week to describe a relationship that has outlived the playing days.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrick said it was worth marking, “40 years this week since he came here,” and added that he is “probably closer to him, and speak more to him now, than I did when I was playing.”

Sky Sports has not confirmed when “Sir Alex: More than a Manager” will air. The teaser is live on skysports.com with a “coming soon” tag.
