Arne Slot future clarified as Liverpool struggle continues

Liverpool’s leadership is prepared to stand by Arne Slot heading into next season, even as results and performances come under increasing scrutiny.

According to The Telegraph, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and senior club figures remain supportive of the Dutch coach and are not planning a managerial change in the near term. The view internally is that Slot, in his first season following Jürgen Klopp’s departure, should be given time to establish his approach.

That stance comes despite a dip in form that has raised questions about Liverpool’s direction and their ability to compete at the highest level this season.

Difficult run intensifies scrutiny

Recent results have only added to the pressure. Liverpool were beaten 4-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on April 4, before turning in another underwhelming performance away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League days later.

As reported by multiple outlets, PSG dictated the tempo from the outset at the Parc des Princes. Désiré Doué opened the scoring early, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added a second after the break in a match largely controlled by the French side.

Liverpool, by contrast, struggled to gain any foothold. They failed to register a shot on target and saw little possession—numbers that reflected how comprehensively they were outplayed.

Tactical decisions questioned

The display prompted pointed criticism from pundits, including former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who took issue with Slot’s tactical setup.

“The manager has tried something [a back five] but he's got it massively wrong tactically in how he went about it,” Carragher said on CBS.

“They were actually more open with the back five than they would be with the back four because they went man-to-man all over the pitch and the three centre-backs had to cover the width of the pitch.”

He added that Virgil van Dijk would likely urge the coach to “never play that system ever again”.

Uncertainty remains despite backing

While public criticism has grown, questions over Slot’s future have not disappeared. The Athletic reported that his position could come under serious threat if Liverpool are eliminated from the Champions League.

For now, however, the message from within the club is one of continuity rather than reaction. The coming days may prove decisive—not just for Liverpool’s European hopes, but for the broader narrative around Slot’s first season in charge.
