JJ Gabriel’s preference, according to the German reporting on his situation, is a move to La Liga. The 16-year-old attacking midfielder from Manchester United’s academy has had his camp sit down with Bayern Munich again, but Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg wrote that “there is currently no offer to the player, as Bayern have not received a commitment from the 16 y/o gem.”

Plettenberg added that “a feeling” within the German club is that Gabriel is leaning towards Spain, with Real Madrid and Barcelona described as the current favourites for a January move.

Manchester United are not giving up. The club have offered Gabriel a scholarship in an attempt to tie him down, an offer he is widely expected to turn down, and INEOS, the minority investors who run football operations at Old Trafford, are considering legal avenues if European clubs push to sign him.

A seven-figure salary demand

The money is the second obstacle, and it may be the bigger one. The Times, as relayed by Yahoo Sports, reported that Gabriel’s representatives are seeking “a seven-figure salary demand” from any club wanting to sign him, a figure Bayern view as “a major hurdle” in the discussions.

Chelsea were turned down earlier. The Yahoo report, citing the same Times piece, said Barcelona have since stepped back and that Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain remain in the running alongside Bayern.

Gabriel has no professional contract at Old Trafford, which under current rules would leave the club entitled only to training compensation if he leaves. That is one reason English clubs’ standard retention tools do not bite here, and why United are leaning on the scholarship offer and the threat of legal action instead.

Why he wants out

The flashpoint, per the reporting, was minutes. Michael Carrick had been set to hand Gabriel his first-team debut against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup, but those plans changed after the teenager left training following a Champions League tie against Sabah in which he did not come on.

Christian Falk of CF Bayern Insider, quoted by CaughtOffside, said Gabriel is looking for “a winning project” and wants to join a club that lifts trophies “virtually every season”. United, who have gone another transfer window without a league title push, do not fit that description.

Gabriel’s representation now includes Ali Barat, and the player has formally asked for his United registration to be cancelled.

January, if the passport comes through

Any move is tied to paperwork. Plettenberg wrote that a January transfer is being planned on the basis that Gabriel can secure a European passport, with a Cypriot route being pursued and alternatives lined up if that falls through. Until that is in place, the clubs in the room, Bayern, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and whoever else enters, cannot formalise anything.

The January window opens on 1 January 2027.
