Juventus had just been awarded a penalty, and Randal Kolo Muani was already standing over the ball. Then Nick Woltemade walked up, lifted the ball from his teammate’s hands and did not give it back.

Kolo Muani did not argue. He stepped aside, Woltemade placed the ball on the spot and in the 67th minute at the Allianz Stadium in Turin he drove his shot straight down the middle to make it 2-2 against Stade Rennais in the Europa League on Thursday.

The penalty had come after a Rennes defender was penalised for handball in his own area. For Woltemade, it was already his second scoring contribution of the match: he had set up Mehmet Zeki Çelik’s fifth-minute opener before the hosts were pulled apart.

Musa Al-Taamari drew Rennes level in the 15th minute, and Boulaye Dia converted from twelve yards in the 43rd after Douglas Luiz was penalised for handball in his own area. Juventus went in behind at the break and chased the game from there.

The point stayed on the table only because of Woltemade’s intervention. Luciano Spalletti, who had started his two strikers together in a 3-5-2, did not single out the penalty-taker switch after the match. He was unhappier with a different moment: an 88th-minute Juventus goal ruled out by VAR for offside.

“I didn’t understand it, and I’m going to look into it,” Spalletti said of the ruling.

He also wanted more from his strike pair.

“I think I can expect more from both of them, because their qualities are greater than the performance they gave tonight,” he said.

Four scoring contributions in three European nights

The night followed a 3-0 defeat at Lazio that left Spalletti’s Juventus eighth in Serie A. In the Europa League, though, Woltemade keeps producing. He has registered four scoring contributions in his three matches in the competition, while remaining goalless in the Italian league, where he has so far only come on as a substitute.

Thursday’s draw kept Juventus unbeaten in the league phase of the Europa League. In Serie A, they sit eight points behind leaders Inter Milan and Lazio.
