Steven Gerrard names club he wants to win league after Liverpool
Steven Gerrard is synonymous with Liverpool, but the former captain has revealed another Premier League club he would not mind seeing win the title.
Speaking during a TNT Sports interview filmed at Anfield, Gerrard reflected on some of his most memorable moments at the stadium and ended up making a surprising admission about Newcastle United.
Gerrard’s Anfield admission
During the interview, Gerrard was shown parts of the stadium connected to his playing career, including the away dressing room a place he never experienced as an opposition player.
Looking around, he joked:

"I'm surprised I'm welcome in here, to be honest."
With Newcastle United due to face Liverpool at Anfield in a Premier League match around the time the interview was recorded, the Magpies’ shirts were laid out inside the room. The moment prompted Gerrard to reveal an unexpected soft spot for the club.
"It's quite fitting, actually, that we're in the Newcastle dressing room because, outside of Liverpool, if I wanted anyone to win the league, it would be Newcastle.
They’re my number two team in the Premier League. I’ve never, ever said that [before], but there you go. That’s live for you."

The comment stood out given Gerrard’s lifelong connection to Liverpool, where he spent the majority of his career and captained the club for more than a decade.
Newcastle’s long wait for the title
Despite their historic status in English football, Newcastle have never won the Premier League since its formation in 1992.
Their closest attempts came in the mid-1990s, when Kevin Keegan’s side finished runners-up in both the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons.
The club’s last top-flight title came much earlier, winning the old First Division in 1927. Newcastle lifted that trophy four times in total during the early decades of the 20th century.

Gerrard himself has seen Liverpool return to the summit of English football in recent years, celebrating the club’s Premier League triumph under Jurgen Klopp in 2019-20 and another title under Arne Slot in 2024-25.
Gerrard previously praised Newcastle winger Gordon
Gerrard has also spoken positively about Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, who was linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer of 2024.
In comments cited by Geordie Boot Boys from an interview in December, Gerrard suggested Liverpool could benefit from strengthening their options on the wing.
"I think that’s [signing a winger] where they need to do a bit in January, the balance of the squad, the recruitment team at Liverpool are unbelievable by the way.

The recruitment team is top, but the squad is imbalanced, losing Diaz, not getting someone to come in. I know they were linked with Anthony Gordon, there’s a lot of pressure on Gakpo to deliver, there isn’t an ideal replacement."
Gordon, an England international and boyhood Liverpool supporter, has continued to attract attention after establishing himself as a key player for Newcastle.
