The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to kick off on Thursday, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in the opening game. As football’s biggest tournament returns, it carries with it a rich history of transforming lesser-known talents into global superstars. From Salvatore Schillaci in 1990 to James Rodriguez in 2014 and Sofyan Amrabat in 2022, the World Cup stage has consistently launched careers into the stratosphere.

According to GOAL.com, this edition, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada, promises to be no different, with a new crop of young stars ready to announce themselves on the biggest stage in football.

Mazadona leads the charge for Algeria

GOAL.com has highlighted Algeria’s 20-year-old forward Ibrahim Maza as one of the breakout candidates to watch at the tournament.

Nicknamed ‘Mazadona’ and often compared to Florian Wirtz, Maza enjoyed an impressive debut season with Bayer Leverkusen after joining from Hertha Berlin last summer. GOAL.com notes that the attacking midfielder registered five goals and six assists during the campaign, attracting interest from clubs including Manchester City, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.

Algeria are appearing at their first World Cup since 2014, and GOAL.com believes Maza could be the player to drive their campaign forward. The outlet also points to the youngster’s confidence, highlighting his bold claim that he is “going to beat Lionel Messi” when Algeria face Argentina in Group J.

Young talents poised for the global stage

Maza is far from the only youngster expected to attract attention. GOAL.com has also identified several other rising stars capable of enhancing their reputations during the tournament.

Yan Diomande (Ivory Coast)

According to GOAL.com, the 19-year-old winger could soon command a transfer fee in excess of €100 million (£86m/$115m). After scoring 12 goals and adding eight assists for RB Leipzig, Diomande was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Year. GOAL.com reports that Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs monitoring his progress.

Gilberto Mora (Mexico)

GOAL.com describes Mora as one of the most exciting prospects in world football. At just 17 years old, the Tijuana midfielder is the youngest player at the World Cup. Despite missing four months through injury at the start of 2026, GOAL.com notes that Mora has established himself as a regular under Mexico boss Javier Aguirre.

Kerim Alajbegovic (Bosnia & Herzegovina)

GOAL.com highlights Alajbegovic’s role in helping Bosnia & Herzegovina secure qualification through play-off victories over Wales and Italy. The 18-year-old winger scored 13 goals for Red Bull Salzburg last season before Bayer Leverkusen exercised a buy-back clause to bring him back to Germany.

Antonio Nusa (Norway)

According to GOAL.com, Nusa has carried the nickname ‘the Norwegian Neymar’ since breaking into the Stabaek first team as a teenager. The 21-year-old RB Leipzig winger has already earned 24 international caps, registering eight goals and nine assists as Norway ended a 28-year wait for a World Cup appearance.

Other names to watch

GOAL.com’s list also includes several other players capable of making a major impact in North America.

Australia’s Nestory Irankunda arrives with a reputation for possessing a devastating left foot after spells with Bayern Munich and Watford. Czechia midfielder Pavel Sulc heads to the World Cup following consecutive 20-goal seasons and a successful first year at Lyon.

Finally, GOAL.com points to Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi, who played a key role in Freiburg’s run to the Europa League final and finished last season with seven goals and six assists.

With the World Cup providing football’s biggest shop window, GOAL.com believes these emerging stars could leave North America as household names.
