Tiger Woods targets Augusta return after difficult comeback in TGL finals

Tiger Woods has resumed competition following months sidelined by injury, but his return highlighted both encouraging signs and lingering challenges as he builds toward Augusta. According to RTÉ Sport, the 15 time major champion featured in the TGL Finals for Jupiter Links, marking his first appearance since undergoing back surgery in October and his first outing since The Open in 2024.

Although Woods showed glimpses of power, including drives exceeding 300 yards, his team suffered a 9,2 defeat to Los Angeles Golf Club. He stepped in for Kevin Kisner during the finals series, but could not prevent Los Angeles, featuring Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose, from sealing the best of three contest early.

"It was fine physically," Woods said afterwards, according to Sky Sports. Reflecting on the result, he added, "We got our ass kicked at the end. Three eagles in a row, we didn't respond."

Signs of recovery

There were still positive indicators in Woods’ performance, particularly in his driving and general movement, suggesting progress after his latest surgery and previous Achilles injury. However, key moments proved decisive, including a missed short putt that allowed momentum to swing firmly in Los Angeles’ favor.

Woods acknowledged the missed opportunity, saying, "I'm frustrated that we didn't get it done. We should have won that match." Despite the defeat, his ability to compete physically offers some encouragement as he attempts to rebuild match sharpness.

Masters ambition remains

Looking ahead, Woods made clear that playing at Augusta National remains a primary goal, even as he manages the realities of recovery at this stage of his career. According to reports from Sky Sports, he emphasized the ongoing effort required to return to full fitness.

"I've been trying, this body doesn't recover like it did when I was 24, 25," he said, before adding, "I keep trying, I want to play."

He also reflected on his long standing connection to the tournament, noting its importance to both him and his family. "I've loved the tournament... I'm going to be there either way," Woods said, underlining his determination to compete if physically possible.

Turning point in the final

Jupiter Links began the deciding match strongly, but the momentum shifted after Woods missed a three foot putt. Los Angeles capitalized emphatically, producing three consecutive eagles to take control of the contest and effectively end the match.

The decisive moment came when Justin Rose set up a close range opportunity on the 10th hole, prompting Jupiter Links to concede. Rose later reflected on the finish, saying, "You're not always going to go three eagles on the bounce. It finished in a hurry."

The result underlined both the competitiveness of the format and the fine margins that shaped the outcome.
