Ronaldo Nazário has decided golf is not for him. Two World Cup finals, two Ballon d’Or trophies and a career spent finding the net did little for the Brazilian when he swapped a football for a golf club at Delhi Golf Club on Wednesday.

The former Brazil striker was part of Nacho Elvira’s group in the pro-am that precedes the DP World India Championship. For Elvira, the Spaniard, this was anything but a routine Wednesday round, as the Spanish golf outlet Ten-Golf noted.

Ronaldo seemed to enjoy himself, up to a point.

“It’s amazing. It’s beautiful,” he said. “It’s just not for me. Too difficult for me.”

He went on to compare the two sports.

“Comparing football to golf is almost the same level of difficulty. Those guys, professional level, they are doing this for their whole life. As I did for my whole life playing football. So, yeah, for me, it’s much easier to play football than golf.”

Delhi’s $4m stop

The DP World India Championship runs from 15 to 18 October at Delhi Golf Club, with a $4m prize fund that the organizers describe as the largest ever offered by a DP World Tour event in India.

The field runs to 144 players on a par-72 layout of roughly 6,912 yards, with tree-lined fairways that reward accuracy. Tommy Fleetwood returns as defending champion after winning the inaugural edition in 2025, and the entry list also features Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Patrick Reed, Shane Lowry, Bubba Watson, Ryan Fox and Indian pair Shubhankar Sharma and Anirban Lahiri. Viktor Hovland withdrew.

McIlroy, back in Delhi for a second year, said this was a trip he had looked forward to.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing a global schedule so I was excited to visit India for the first time last season,” he said. “The golf fans in India were so welcoming, and the whole experience was truly memorable.”

A No. 9 jersey for the minister

Ronaldo’s Delhi week has not been limited to the course. On Thursday he met Raksha Khadse, India’s Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, in New Delhi and gifted her his Brazil No. 9 jersey.

“A meeting that opens doors to working with the Government of India to create new opportunities for football and other sports,” Ronaldo said after the meeting.
