Trent Alexander-Arnold’s reinvention at the Santiago Bernabéu has stalled. In his second season since leaving Liverpool for Madrid, the England international has slipped down José Mourinho’s pecking order, and the transfer whispers are already getting louder.

The latest voice to weigh in is William Gallas. The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender believes the 28-year-old has already seen enough of La Liga.

“I think Trent Alexander-Arnold will move on now because he hasn’t played many games at Real Madrid,” Gallas said in an interview with SeatPick, relayed by TEAMtalk.

Gallas raised Bayern Munich as the sort of transition-heavy side that could get the best out of an attacking right-back, before naming Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United as realistic Premier League destinations.

The numbers behind the mood are not kind. Alexander-Arnold has started only four of Real Madrid’s 11 La Liga fixtures in 2026/27, and his last top-flight minutes came in a 52-minute cameo at Villarreal on 10 October.

Arsenal watching, Madrid not pushing

TEAMtalk transfer writer Graeme Bailey reports that Arsenal are one of four clubs monitoring the situation, alongside Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City. Real Madrid, meanwhile, are not driving an exit.

The club is “not actively looking to force Alexander-Arnold out”, Bailey writes, with sources telling him the player remains settled in Madrid. That stance would soften, according to the same report, if his minutes do not pick up.

For Arsenal, the fit carries a certain logic. Mikel Arteta’s side sit top of the Premier League, and a right-back whose crossing and passing range once stitched Liverpool’s title sides together would plug directly into the attacking structure Arteta has been chasing.

No formal interest yet

Nothing has been confirmed. No club has filed a bid, no agent has been put on the record, and Real Madrid have not signaled any willingness to sell in January. Gallas’s view is a former pro reading the tea leaves, and TEAMtalk’s tracking describes club interest rather than negotiations.

That leaves Alexander-Arnold where he was on 5 November: in José Mourinho’s Real Madrid squad, short of starts, and watching the January window approach. It opens on 1 January.
