According to Hindustan Times, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to break new ground with three separate opening ceremonies spread across its host nations – Mexico, Canada and the United States. The celebrations, overseen by renowned creative director Marco Balich, will take place ahead of each country’s opening match and are designed to showcase the unique culture of each host while highlighting the global spirit of the tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the concept, describing it as a fitting way to launch what will be the biggest World Cup in history.

“The FIFA World Cup is a moment the world shares, and that begins with how we open it,” Infantino said. “Starting with Mexico City and continuing the next days with Toronto and Los Angeles, these ceremonies will bring together music, culture and football in a way that reflects both the individuality of each nation and the unity that defines this tournament.”

Mexico to host first ceremony

The opening festivities will begin at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11. The ceremony will take place before Mexico’s opening match against South Africa, a repeat of the sides’ meeting at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Mexico, which previously hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986, has assembled an impressive lineup of performers for the event. Global superstar Shakira will headline the show and perform “Dai Dai,” the official song of the tournament. She will be joined by Burna Boy, Tyla and J Balvin, while local stars including Alejandro Fernández, Lila Downs, Belinda, Danny Ocean, Maná and Los Ángeles Azules are also set to perform.

Canada makes history

The second opening ceremony will be staged in Toronto on June 12, marking Canada’s first-ever experience as a World Cup host nation. The celebration will precede Canada’s opening fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Canadian performers Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez and Michael Bublé are expected to feature, alongside international artists including Elyanna, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream and William Prince.

United States rounds off celebrations

The final opening ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on June 13 before the United States begins its campaign against Paraguay.

The United States last hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1994 and will play a central role in the expanded 48-team tournament, which is expected to attract record-breaking global audiences.

World Cup stars prepare for another shot at glory

Away from the opening ceremonies, anticipation is building for the tournament itself. Defending champions Argentina are expected to be led once again by Lionel Messi as they attempt to retain the trophy they won in Qatar in 2022.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo could be preparing for what many believe will be his final opportunity to win the FIFA World Cup, adding another major storyline to the competition.
