Trump suggests rebranding ICE-agents to “NICE”-agents
In a strategic move to reshape public perception, Donald Trump has signaled his support for renaming U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (NICE), according to Independent. The suggestion, which Trump reposted on his Truth Social platform, aims to influence media coverage of the controversial agency, coming just as the Senate approved a significant budget resolution to fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The proposed name change originated from an X post by a self-professed MAGA journalist, explicitly stating its purpose: "so the media has to say NICE agents all day every day." Trump endorsed the idea with characteristic enthusiasm, adding, "GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT . President DJT" to his repost. The original X post garnered over 800,000 views, highlighting the reach of such branding plays within his base.
Trump's branding play for ICE
This isn't the first time Trump has advocated for a name change to shift public discourse. He has previously suggested rebranding the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and the Department of Defense to the Department of War, indicating a consistent strategy of using nomenclature as a tool for political messaging. The focus on ICE, however, comes amidst heightened scrutiny and controversy surrounding the agency during Trump’s second presidency.
ICE has been at the center of intense debate due to its role in immigration crackdowns, including sending masked agents into cities across the United States.

The controversy escalated in January when two residents were shot dead by federal agents in Minneapolis. In response, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) closed in mid-February after Democrats demanded government reform of immigration operations. Trump subsequently fired then-DHS Secretary Kristi Noem the following month, further underscoring the political volatility surrounding immigration enforcement.
Senate approves significant funding amidst controversy
Parallel to the rebranding discussion, Senate Republicans moved forward with a substantial budget resolution for ICE and CBP. On Thursday, the bill passed in a tight 50-48 vote, with all Senate Democrats and two Republicans opposing the measure.
The resolution allows for as much as $140 billion to be allocated to the agencies, setting the stage for a major financial commitment to immigration enforcement.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized the Republican-led initiative. "While families are paying more for gas, groceries, and housing, Republicans are writing a $140 billion dollar (sic) check to Trump’s enforcement machine," Schumer stated, highlighting the Democratic opposition's focus on economic concerns.

Despite the Senate's approval, the resolution still requires adoption by the House of Representatives before the funding can be formally handed to ICE and CBP. A Senate GOP aide indicated to The Washington Post that Republicans expect to spend around half of the potential $140 billion, suggesting the final allocation could be less than the authorized maximum.
