As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals intensifies, the specter of Donald Trump’s political influence and controversial policies is casting a long shadow over what is widely regarded as the world’s largest sporting event. According to CNN, Trump’s political comeback has unexpectedly secured him a central role in the tournament’s narrative, drawing FIFA President Gianni Infantino into what CNN Politics described as a “global MAGA orbit.”
CNN reports that the relationship between the former U.S. President and FIFA’s leader has been notably close. Trump, who displayed a replica World Cup trophy in his Oval Office, welcomed Infantino on multiple occasions and even presented Chelsea with a trophy at a FIFA club tournament in the U.S. last year, according to CNN. The partnership culminated in Infantino awarding Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize in December at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, where Trump serves as Board Chair, CNN noted. CNN also highlighted Infantino’s public support for Trump, pointing to an Instagram post following Trump’s second-term inaugural rally in which the FIFA president wrote: “Together, we will make not only America great again, but also the entire world.”
Political turbulence and fan concerns
According to CNN, despite FIFA’s statutes stressing neutrality in political matters, Trump’s hardline policies are creating an atmosphere of global tension that threatens to overshadow the tournament.
CNN reports that concerns are mounting over several issues:

- Fear of immigration enforcement (ICE) and border scrutiny
- Political tensions with allies and participating nations
- Calls for boycotts or reduced participation
Beyond immigration, CNN noted that Trump’s second term has been marked by tariffs and criticism of traditional allies. The network reported that some observers have even discussed the possibility of a European boycott of the World Cup after Trump demanded that Denmark hand over Greenland. According to CNN, this political climate stands in stark contrast to the unifying image FIFA seeks to project through an event whose 2022 World Cup final attracted an audience of approximately 1.5 billion viewers.
Travel hurdles and ticket prices
CNN also highlighted growing concerns about the United States’ readiness to host an event of this scale. According to CNN, leading travel executives have warned that the country could struggle to effectively stage the tournament due to lengthy visa wait times for supporters, outdated technology, staffing shortages at customs checkpoints, and long airport security queues.
As cited by CNN, Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, stressed the urgency of the situation, saying: “We’re running out of time.”
Ticket prices have emerged as another major concern. CNN reported that soaring costs are pricing many supporters out of attending matches. Even Trump expressed surprise at the prices, telling the New York Post that he would not pay $1,000 for a ticket to the United States’ opening World Cup match. “I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay it either, to be honest with you,” Trump said, according to CNN’s reporting.
