In a move that would have been unimaginable just two years ago, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden are not a part of the English World Cup squad, according to Dale Johnson of BBC Sport.
The decision by coach Thomas Tuchel is a ruthless selection policy that prioritises current form over past reputation.
Both players, products of the Manchester City academy, were once seen as cornerstones of England’s future.
Foden, an attacking midfielder honed into a star by Pep Guardiola, started the Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.

Palmer, who left Etihad Stadium for Chelsea to carve out his own path, came off the bench in that same final, equalising after just three minutes.
Their individual skills highlight their rapid ascent in top football. Palmer was named England’s men’s player of the year and PFA young player of the year, while Foden secured the senior PFA award in the same period. Foden also plundered 19 Premier League goals and 27 in all competitions during the 2023-24 season. However, a recent dip in form appears to have swayed Tuchel.
Form over reputation: The cases of Palmer and Foden
Palmer’s initial impact at Chelsea was undeniable, scoring 37 Premier League goals in his first two seasons. This season, however, has seen a drop, with nine goals in 25 Premier League appearances.
Foden, despite a prolific 2023-24 campaign, has also experienced a concerning dip in form. He netted six goals in five games during a purple patch just before Christmas this season but has not scored since.

A key moment in Tuchel’s assessment reportedly came in March, during a friendly against Uruguay. Foden was put in the number 10 role in the absence of Harry Kane, but was substituted just 11 minutes into the second half, replaced by Palmer. England subsequently drew 1-1 with Uruguay and lost 1-0 to Japan in their March friendlies, performances that likely solidified Tuchel’s concerns.
Tuchel’s trusted lieutenants and rising contenders
With Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham a certainty for the squad, competition for attacking midfield berths is fierce. Tuchel has seemingly turned his attention to other in-form players:
- Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa): Rogers has earned Tuchel’s trust throughout his tenure, notably netting Aston Villa’s third goal in their 3-0 Europa League triumph over Freiburg.
- Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest): Gibbs-White is the joint top English scorer in the Premier League this season with 14 goals, and has scored six goals in his past six club matches. Despite winning six England caps, his only competitive appearances under Tuchel came in two World Cup qualifiers against Andorra, and he has not featured for England since a 3-0 friendly win over Wales in October.
- Eberechi Eze (Arsenal): Eze has earned a place. He contributed seven goals and two assists to Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign and has netted three goals in six World Cup qualifiers for Tuchel. His absence through injury during the March friendlies, where England struggled for creativity, inadvertently highlighted his importance to the coach.
Tuchel’s anticipated selections signal a clear message: for England, current performance on the pitch will trump any prior achievements or perceived potential.
