Tyson Fury has offered a candid explanation for his less-than-dominant performance against Francis Ngannou in October 2023, stating he viewed the crossover boxing match as merely an “exhibition” rather than a serious contest.
The WBC heavyweight champion, 38, secured a points victory over Ngannou, 39, but the fight was marred by controversy and saw Fury hit the canvas. Speaking to ALF Global, Fury reflected on his mindset going into the bout.
“I didn’t not train for him, because I ‘didn’t think he was a good fighter’. I knew he was a good fighter, but to me it’s levels to boxing,” Fury explained. He elaborated that his approach differed significantly from preparing for a world champion.
Fury underscored his perception of the bout as a casual affair. “It wasn’t, in my mind, a fight; it’s just an exhibition, a game. To him, to Ngannou, it was: ‘Ah, big fight. I fight Tyson Fury!’ To me, it was play, a game. You know what I mean?” This perspective is notable given Ngannou, a former MMA star, managed to knock Fury down during the contest and the scorecards were widely debated. Ngannou has not returned to the boxing ring since his subsequent defeat to Anthony Joshua.

Looking ahead to Joshua
Fury’s focus now shifts to what he undoubtedly considers a “real fight” – a highly anticipated clash with Anthony Joshua. A contract for this blockbuster bout has been signed, though a dispute over the venue remains. Madison Square Garden in New York is currently considered the most likely location for the potential November 20 showdown.
This upcoming fight harks back to the intensity of Fury’s past encounters, such as his memorable trilogy with Deontay Wilder. That series saw Fury draw the first fight, then claim the WBC and vacant The Ring heavyweight titles from Wilder, before defending them in their third brutal encounter.
As Fury prepares for another championship-level challenge, his candor about the Ngannou fight offers a glimpse into the unique pressures and perspectives of a heavyweight champion.
