United captain faces uncertain future after Amorim exit
A club drifting without clarity
Manchester United’s latest managerial change has intensified concerns about the club’s overall direction, both on and off the pitch. The decision to part ways with Ruben Amorim came only a day after his public criticism of the club’s hierarchy following a draw against Leeds United, comments that ultimately made his position untenable.
According to The Sun, senior figures at United were alarmed by Amorim’s remarks and moved quickly to remove him, a decision that further fuelled uncertainty within the squad. The timing proved especially damaging, with United’s subsequent FA Cup exit reinforcing fears that the club lacks a coherent sporting strategy under the INEOS ownership model.
Dressing room unease grows
The manager’s departure has had a noticeable impact inside the dressing room. Several players are understood to be frustrated by the lack of stability and long-term planning, with some already questioning their futures ahead of next summer.
According to The Sun, there is particular concern among players about captain Bruno Fernandes, who has been a central figure during some of the club’s most challenging seasons. Team-mates reportedly fear the ongoing turbulence may finally test his patience.

Fernandes and the weight of leadership
Fernandes has previously spoken about the role Amorim played in persuading him to remain at Manchester United last summer, despite serious interest from Saudi side Al-Hilal. A lucrative proposal was available at the time, but the midfielder later suggested he was unsettled by the club’s apparent openness to selling him.
While Fernandes has publicly stated that he intends to reassess his future after the 2026 World Cup in North America, those close to the player believe his views may already be evolving. According to The Sun, the continued uncertainty at boardroom level has contributed to a growing sense of detachment.
A decision shaped by instability
Signed from Sporting CP in 2020, Fernandes has been one of United’s most consistent performers through multiple managerial changes and rebuilds. His current contract runs until 2027, placing the club in a strong negotiating position on paper.
However, within the squad there is an acceptance that if Fernandes chooses to leave next summer, his decision would be understood. Years of instability, combined with the latest managerial upheaval, have once again raised questions about whether Manchester United can offer its captain the platform he needs to compete at the highest level.
