Michael Yormack has put the summer rumours to bed. Arsenal did go hard for Vinicius Junior.

Speaking to SportsBoom, the Roc Nation Sports International president said the Premier League club pushed to prise the Brazilian winger away from Real Madrid in the window that closed with him still at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“You saw the news; Arsenal was very involved. They were very aggressive,” Yormack said.

Vinicius was down to the final year of his previous Madrid contract. Real Madrid were asking €170m to open talks, while Arsenal explored a package below that figure. Neither position moved far enough.

A pitch worth hearing out

Yormack did not deny the move was taken seriously on the player’s side. He described a conversation that could have gone differently.

“Did he ever seriously consider Arsenal? I mean, of course. When a team like Arsenal rolls out the red carpet for you and makes you feel really wanted, then obviously you have to listen.”

The agent framed the pursuit as flattering rather than irritating, a distinction that matters: Madrid’s negotiations with Vinicius had been stalled for more than a year over salary and a signing bonus, and Arsenal’s intervention sharpened the choice.

Mourinho’s hand in the renewal

Madrid closed the deal on 6 August 2026, announcing a six-year extension that runs until 2032. The club set the release clause at €1 billion, a figure designed to price him out of reach rather than invite another bid.

Sky Sports reported that new head coach José Mourinho, appointed in June on a three-year deal, played a part in persuading the player to commit. Madrid also significantly improved their contract offer in the final meetings before the signing.

Vinicius marked the signing with an Instagram post that read: “Eight years at the Bernabeu is too short… six more years and forever.”

Where it leaves Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s recruitment team now have to look elsewhere for a left-sided forward of that profile. The €1 billion clause removes any realistic route back to the same target in January or next summer.

Yormack’s closing line was the one Arsenal did not want to hear.

“But he’s where he wants to be, and we’re happy; he’s there.”

Arsenal have made no public comment on the approach.
