The gap between Barcelona and Real Madrid off the pitch now looks wider than any gap on it. Mourinho’s side will travel to Camp Nou on Sunday 25 October carrying the fallout of a red card, a disputed injury return and a dressing-room story that refuses to go away, while the home team sits top of La Liga having won their opening eight league fixtures for only the second time in club history.

Vinicius Junior will almost certainly watch it from the stands. The Brazilian was sent off in the 72nd minute at Villarreal on 10 October after a VAR review disallowed what would have been his second goal of the night; the reason, bizarre even by Clasico-week standards, was that he had pulled Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba’s hair in the build-up.

The club is preparing for a ban under the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s violent-conduct scale, which runs from one to three matches with the final ruling pending the disciplinary committee’s verdict.

Vinicius Junior issued a public apology a day later.

“Sorry to the team and the fans,” he wrote.

Mourinho inherits a dressing room still called ‘cold’

Mourinho was appointed on an initial three-year deal on 11 June 2026, returning to the club he last managed between 2010 and 2013. The brief was partly footballing and partly political: steady a squad that had already seen Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa cycle through the dugout in the first half of 2026.

Four months in, that part of the project remains unfinished.

Journalist Anton Meana told Cadena SER’s El Larguero that the mood among the players has not shifted since Alonso’s exit in the spring.

“The only problem is that I still see the dressing room as cold as it was five months ago,” Meana said.

Kylian Mbappe has sat near the centre of the recent noise. The France forward left international duty with a knee injury before being photographed at a Paris nightclub and posting a video of himself cycling in the Swiss Alps; Mourinho reportedly told him to show more discretion away from training.

Valverde beats his own grade-3 timeline

If one piece of good news has arrived, it is Federico Valverde. The Uruguay midfielder was diagnosed with a grade-3 sprain in his left ankle on 22 September after a challenge from Atletico Madrid’s Lee Kang-in two days earlier. Standard medical guidance for a grade-3 sprain, where ligament fibres are fully torn, is six to 12 weeks.

Valverde was back in the starting line-up at Villarreal on 10 October, less than three weeks after the diagnosis, prompting Atletico Madrid to mock the speed of the recovery on social media.

That makes him available for Camp Nou, where he is likely to be needed in a reshuffled attack.

Yamal and Raphinha behind Barcelona’s record

Barcelona have scored 34 goals in their eight league games, an average of 4.25 per match, equalling Gerardo Martino’s 2013-14 opening tally and sitting behind only Sevilla’s 1940-41 start as the strongest in La Liga history. Twenty-four points from a possible 24 have given them a six-point lead at the top.

Lamine Yamal has seven goals and five assists across those eight league appearances. Raphinha has been even more productive, with 12 La Liga goals already and a Player of the Month award for August after scoring five in the opening month.

They are supported by Anthony Gordon, who joined from Newcastle in a £69.3m deal in May and has settled quickly into Flick’s rotation.

Referee row still unresolved

The identity of the referee has become its own subplot. Spanish radio and newspapers named Canary Islands official Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez as the likely appointment, prompting a campaign from Madrid-aligned outlets over his Clasico record and an irritated response from Catalan paper Mundo Deportivo over the early leak.

Refereeing account Archivo VAR has disputed that Hernandez Hernandez is a candidate at all, and under a new RFEF policy the appointment will only be made public 24 hours before kick-off.

Kick-off at Camp Nou is at 9pm local time on Sunday. The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony follows at the London Palladium on Monday 26 October, with Yamal and Raphinha both in the frame.
