The breakthrough came 24 hours before the club announced it. On Wednesday 5 August, Real Madrid’s negotiating team sat down with Vinicius Junior’s representatives with an improved financial offer, according to ESPN’s inside account of the talks.
That single meeting broke a stand-off that had run since the previous winter and had, by the summer, made the Brazilian’s departure look increasingly plausible.
The club confirmed the deal on 6 August, tying Vinicius to the Bernabéu until 30 June 2032.
The €350m Saudi package and Arsenal contact
The Saudi Pro League had put together a package worth roughly €350m per year, which Vinicius rejected for sporting reasons, ESPN reported. Arsenal, meanwhile, had assessed the financial viability of a move and made contact with both the player and manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal’s interest, reported through the summer, never crystallised into a public bid.
Madrid’s offer went above €22m
Madrid’s post-World Cup offer had sat at around €22m per season. Vinicius had originally asked for €30m, and an earlier proposal of €20m had been turned down in 2025, ESPN reported.
The final agreement went above €22m, though neither side has disclosed the figure. His previous salary at the Bernabéu was around €17.5m per year.
The talks had dragged on for close to 18 months. Real Madrid opened them in February 2025 and reached near-consensus by that May, only for a late dispute over bonuses to derail the paperwork, ESPN reported. By August 2025 the whole file had been shelved until after the 2026 World Cup.

Mourinho a factor in the final push
Jose Mourinho took charge on a three-year contract running to 2029, appointed after Florentino Pérez was re-elected as president. He joined the squad for preseason on 13 July, replacing Álvaro Arbeloa, who had ended the previous season as interim coach.
Vinicius’s contract talks had already resumed by that point. But the prospect of working under a manager Vinicius wanted to play for was one of the factors that unlocked the deal in the days that followed, ESPN reported.
Since joining Madrid in July 2018 at 18, the Brazilian has played 375 matches, scored 128 goals and won 14 trophies, including two Champions League titles and three LaLiga titles. He was named FIFA’s Best Men’s Player in 2024.
Real Madrid called the 26-year-old “one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history” in the statement confirming the extension.
